Bugzilla 4.4 has some useful new features such as the ability to save graphical and tabular reports, and the new tagging system which is much more intuitive and easy to use than the old one. Those interacting with bmo using the WebServices API would also benefit from several new methods.
No longer blocks: 924405
Another (albeit minor) improvement would be to have the Browse page separate Products by Classification (bug 779747).
Is there any basic timeframe when this might happen?
I don't see anything mentioned in https://wiki.mozilla.org/BMO/Roadmap_2014
True, we haven't put it into our road map. We have backported quite a lot from 4.4 (and trunk), and right now we're really focussed on performance improvements. It's still probably a good idea to upgrade to catch the extra things mentioned above, but I think we might just wait until 5.0 is released and go straight to that, mainly to get the HTML5 support. That might be happening in a month or two; will report back later.
we've decided to not upgrade bmo to version 4.4, in order to focus on other features/improvements.

requests can be filed for specific features to be backported, however due to the scope of changes this may not always be possible.

we plan on upgrading to 5.0 following its release.

Is there a bug to follow for this?

I see; thanks for clarifying.
I was mostly after seeing http://bzr.mozilla.org/bmo/4.2/files/head:/extensions/Needinfo and http://bzr.mozilla.org/bmo/4.2/files/head:/extensions/ComponentWatching ported to 4.4 and trying to deploy it on a non-bmo Bugzilla (as these are the two bmo extensions that my users request), but I guess that means I am on my own.

i'm happy to ensure those extensions work on 4.4 as well as 4.2. file any issues you find when running under 4.4 against their components here. (we already do this for other some extensions).
