Hi Lee-

We're in the process of localizing /new and wondered what you would think about trying to make a generic browser image similar to the one already on /new that could be use for all locales (one with no words other than Mozilla and Firefox).

What do you think? Do you have time in July to work on something like this?

Thx,
Jen

/new screeshot

Hi Jennifer,
ARe you referring to the text on the tabs and browser window header?
ie: "Firefox Start Page", "New Tab" etc?

Hi Lee-

Yes - exactly. Would the image make sense with either the text just erased? Or could we edit the image to make sense with only the words Mozilla and Firefox?

Our good friends at Chrome have a browser image without words: https://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/

I'll be in SF on Thursday if you want to look at it together then...

Thanks for your help,
Jen

Jennifer, here's what this could look like if we removed all text except, "Mozilla Firefox" in the open tab. I left "Google" in the search field, assuming Google is ubiquitous enough - but we can certainly take that out too.

This is great, Lee, thanks! I think it will work for a locale-neutral image.

Pascal - what do you think?

Lee: Just double checking that you will also provide a Windows version of the screenshot. Should we just use the mac screenshot for linux?

It appears we are using the Windows screenshot for Linux users. Is that acceptable or should we get a Linux screenshot?

I believe I have both Windows and OSX browser screenshots in my PSD. I just wanted to make sure the graphic in Comment 3 was sufficient absence of EN text.

It would be great to have a Linux screenshot (Ubuntu/Unity one which is what most users would have). Otherwise, I think a Windows screenshot is better than a Mac screenshot for Linux because if we use a mac screenshot, the user will probably wonder why we show him that OS while Windows and may think that we propose him a Mac download.

+1 to Linux screenshots. Who can provide that for Lee to edit?

Pascal: Can you confirm the screenshot in comment 3 is good for Mac?

The 2 screenshots available to me are the ones that appear in the page: Windows and OSX versions. I'm not certain if there have been any browser chrome updates since that page went live, but if there are any revisions/new versions needed, we may want to check with Stephen Horlander and ask if he could provide the latest-greatest versions. I only have the 2 flat graphics on-hand

Stephen - Could you please provide Lee with the newest OSX and Windows browser chrome graphics?

It does look good to me l10n-wise but I am not a mac person, I don't know if it reflects acurately the latest mac UI.

Here is a screenshot on Ubuntu 13.04/Unity of Firefox in case it helps, if you need a different one with another width/height ratio, just ask.

I don't see any problem here. The only things missing from the real thing are the title of the windows and the label on the new tab, I don't think many people will notice them.

OK All,
Here are the 4 images you requested: http://cl.ly/410a0F3d3g16

- Windows
- Mac
- Linux
- Android

*I'm resending everything in a bundle here, bc I made some really minor adjustments to the previous PNGs that I posted. All of these should be up to date, and ready to rock.

Next time please include product marketing during the review process for any product screenshots that will go on our website.

There are some tweaks to this image that would be nice to make since we're redoing it.

- The bookmark image in this screenshot it out of date, now the bookmark is a star within the URL bar
- There's an additional triangle drop down in the URL bar that's not in this image
- Remove that blank unopened long tab that's directly to the right of the active tab -- it looks a bit odd since normally it would hold the page's favicon and title tag

Should I file these in another bug?

Hi Laura,

Let's keep it in this bug. Lee is out on PTO this week, but will be able to make changes when he returns next week.

Thanks for the feedback, Laura! So sorry about mistakenly leaving you off the bug.

I'll ping shorlander via email about getting updated product PSDs to work with.
We can update these screenshots in keeping with Laura's changes directly on our end here. Laura, are the other changes ok to avoid having localization issues? These include:

1. Removing the "Go to a Website" text in the empty location bar
2. Shorten the default tab title from "Mozilla Firefox Start Page" to "Mozilla Firefox"

I think these are reasonable alterations for the sake of l10n.

I like the proposed changes. Do we need to have Lee make these edits and resend all platforms?

Woo hoo!

Also, will these locale netural screenshots eliminate the need to support RTL text as mentioned here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=891362#c0 ?

If we abstract enough to cover both RTL and LRT langs, then I think we might just be left with an empty box.

The RTL browser would have a whole different orientation (tabs on the other side, toolbar controls reversed, etc.). Also, for the little text that we do still have "Firefox" and "Mozilla Firefox", if it's English, it can't be RTL, but if it *is* set in an RTL language, then we're dipping our toes into per-language screenshots.

I'm clarifying the % of /new visitors from RTL langs and will make a decision based on that.

Thanks!
In this set of screenshot updates could we improve them for retina display? Steven, do we have assets that Lee could use for this?
Steven, to clarify, we need .psds to account for all platforms that will view this page, so that Lee can prepare the images. Linux, Mac, Windows. We can ask Ian for Android assets if you do not have them.

Lee, can you validate that this is what you need?

Sorry for the delayed response, Holly.
Yes, it would be helpful to use the layered PSDs to optimize for Retina display and make any graphical changes. Sounds like Steven G. and team have been able to make Laura's revisions. If if I were to make the higher res graphics, it would be easier to match them to whatever changes have been made by Steven G. last week. Thanks

I've updated the screenshots to be more locale-neutral in this PR which will merge into the other unified download work in that branch: https://github.com/nburka/bedrock/pull/6/files

High-dpi ("retina") screenshots will depend on: Bug 898013
