As a Metro Firefox user, I want to be able to open PDFs in the system viewer app rather than the non-touch responsive PDF.js implementation in Firefox.

Summary: Story - disable pdf.js and instead hand PDFs to the system viewer app → Story - hand PDFs to the system viewer app
Should it fall back to PDF.js if the user has uninstalled the Reader app (and no other PDF reader is installed)?

No. We should not push PDF.js in Firefox Metro until is is comfortable with touch input. Until then, users will have to rely on third party apps for PDFs.

Went through the following "Story" for iteration #16 without issues. Used the following build:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2013-10-22-03-02-02-mozilla-central/
- Went through the original story attached in comment #0 without any issues
- Ensured that when a default application is not selected, the PDF doesn't open in Firefox Metro ("Run" is also removed from the download app bar)
- Ensured that when the MS Reader is set as default, the PDF is downloaded and then opened with the Reader App automatically
- Ensured that when the Adobe Reader is set as default, the PDF is downloaded and then opened with the Adobe Reader
Asa, not sure if this is a bug or not. When you use Adobe Reader as the default program for PDF's, Adobe Reader is opened on the desktop but never switches to it (Firefox Metro just stays on the white page after the download with the download app bar visible). When the user selects "Run", its then switched to the Desktop. Should it switch to the desktop automatically? (the same way it switches to the Reader App when a PDF is downloaded?)

Kamil, that sounds like a bug worth filing. I don't think it's worth blocking the release on though. Thanks for asking. (BTW, in case I haven't said it elsewhere, your contributions to Metro Firefox have been amazing. Thank you very much for all the effort you've put in over these many many months.)

Went through the following "Story" for iteration #19 testing without any issues. Used the following build: (tested with Windows 8.1)
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/2013-11-27-03-02-01-mozilla-central/
- Went through the original story attached in comment #0 without any issues
- When downloading a PDF and the default application is desktop based, ensured that Firefox Metro switches to the desktop environment and opens the PDF file without any issues
- When opening a PDF via the "Open" button while the default application is desktop based, ensured that Firefox Metro switches to the desktop environment and opens the PDF file without any issues
- When downloading a PDF and the default application is metro based, ensured that Firefox Metro switches to the metro based MS app and opens the PDF without any issues
- Went through all of the above test cases using all of the available views in Windows 8.1 (ensured that when the view is 50/50, that the desktop PDF application still launches)
- Ensured that "Show in Files" works as expected (switching to the metro environment and opening the correct location under file explorer)
- Ensured that press the "X" under the downloads app bar correctly dismisses the app bar
- Downloaded the Adobe Reader Touch app from MS store (set as default application) and ensured PDF's from Firefox Metro open correctly
- Ensured MS Read app also worked without any issues when it's set as the default application
