Details

We've had numerous "Disconnect Errors" on the daily mozmill runs on Windows 8 last week.
All across different tests, I've noted the first 2 in bug 898996 and bug 899001

We've seen this before where if windows 8 propmts for an update, and spawns the update overlay, the currently running testrun will fail with a Disconnect Error.

I have manually updated all Windows 8 boxes.
We should monitor the next week the number of seemingly random Disconnect Error failures.
If they are still happening we might have another problem in regards to Windows 8.

Henrik, didn't we turned the Update Overlay window off?
So this should not be happening anymore?

Well we've just had another Disconnect Error, but this one is bug 856541 so it's older than the failures we've seen this week:
http://mozmill-daily.blargon7.com/#/functional/report/bccc2ea9ac1e478fa074c699d809c47e

Lets hope we'll have no other Disconnect Errors in other tests over the weekend.
We also saw issues with mm-win-8-64-3, where several Firefox instances were running. Also present was a warning about virus protection, as well as the event viewer.

I have now turned off all messages in Control Panel\System and Security\Action Center\Change Action Center settings

I also disabled the automatic Java update checking, but this change didn't seem to persist.

If the above changes are necessary, which I believe they are, then we will need to update the templates so any new instances we create automatically get this behaviour. I'll leave this bug open for Henrik's comments.
The problem with mm-win-8-64-3 has recurred so I have taken it temporarily offline again while we investigate.
Sorry, but that was my fault. I totally missed that Windows 8 now shows the full-screen overlay for updates. Indeed, we should disable update checks completely.

But this should not only happen for OS level updates but also for everything else which shows balloons in the system tray. I will file a follow-up once this one has been done.

Well, lets do it with this bug completely, so we do not have fragmented information across different bugs.
OS: Windows 8 → All
Summary: Disabled Windows 8 update overlay → Disable update checks for all applications and the operating system across platforms
Here an overview of updates which have to be disabled on the Windows nodes:

* OS security updates (including recommended updates)
* Java
* Flash
* Classic Shell (Win8 and Win8.1) [Programs -> Classic Shell -> Classic Shell Update]

All those have been done now. I will check OS X and Linux tomorrow.
When I change Java the change did not persist, how did you get it to do so?

Not sure how you did this without any given steps but for me it worked through the control panel applet.

Andrei, there is no need to add dependencies here. If we would start with that we could mainly add all disconnect bugs. So lets better leave it as is.
No longer blocks: 898996, 899001
For our OS X machines the following updates have been disabled through the preferences pane:

* Software updates (includes Java on 10.6)
* Flash
* Java
* Bluetooth (for mouse and keyboard assistant)
No changes were necessary for Ubuntu 12.04. But some 12.10 machines had notifications enabled for new Ubuntu versions, which have now been disabled. Lets see if that stops all of them.

I will update the Mana page accordingly in a bit.
Mana has been updated:

Adrian, what's the best way to check the templates? Shall we move this bug over to the infra component or can we handle that directly here?
Flags: needinfo?(afernandez)
For the templates, the best thing to do, is turn them on and you will need to check that they fit the "standard" and turn them back to templates once confirmed.

Ok, so if you can turn them into VMs today I can take care of them tomorrow.
Not sure which ones you needed, but from reading the comments;
following are on (on temporary IPs so possible that they could be on different IPs when you get to check):
Ubuntu_12.10_x86 10.22.73.219
Ubuntu_12.10_x86-64 10.22.73.244
Win_8.1P_x86 10.22.73.207
Win_8.1P_x86-64 10.22.73.237
Win_8_x86 10.22.73.220
Win_8_x86-64 10.22.73.221
Win_7_x86 10.22.73.216
Win_7_x86-64 10.22.73.226

> Not sure which ones you needed, but from reading the comments;

Sorry, for not being clear about that. Additionally to the ones below I also need Windows XP and Vista. Further I would like to have an extra look at the Ubuntu 12.04 machines, if the templates are in sync.

> Ubuntu_12.10_x86 10.22.73.219
> Ubuntu_12.10_x86-64 10.22.73.244

I cannot connect to both of them.

> Win_8.1P_x86 10.22.73.207
> Win_8.1P_x86-64 10.22.73.237
> Win_8_x86 10.22.73.220
> Win_8_x86-64 10.22.73.221
> Win_7_x86 10.22.73.216
> Win_7_x86-64 10.22.73.226

All done.
For the Ubuntu ones that you can't connect, possible that reminna is having cert issues again. I could connect to the VM successfully (ie Bug 905142)

As for Windows XP,Vista and Ubuntu 12.04, they are online;
WinXP_x86 10.22.73.224
WinVista_x86 10.22.73.225
Ubuntu_12.04_x86 10.22.73.242
Ubuntu_12.04_x86-64 10.22.73.243

Once all VMs are checked off, I will convert all back to templates.

Nope. I accidentally had RDP pre-selected in Remmina and missed to change it to VNC.

> WinXP_x86 10.22.73.224
> WinVista_x86 10.22.73.225

All those VMs have been completed as of now. I have also updated the VMs with all the system and other application updates, and installed the Microsoft Security Essentials.

I still have a couple of VMS to update but I wont be able to finish them before tomorrow:

> Win_8.1P_x86 10.22.73.207
> Win_8.1P_x86-64 10.22.73.237

All done finally after dozen of restarts. Adrian, you can convert them back into templates. Thanks.
All VMs converted back to templates and the ones with outdated VMware tools were updated.

List of updated VMware tools VMs;
Ubuntu_12.04_x86
Ubuntu_12.04_x86-64
Ubuntu_12.10_x86
Ubuntu_12.10_x86-64
Win_8_x86
Win_8_x86-64
WinXP_x86

They were rebooted to make sure the updated version does not prevent the VM from booting etc.
