They're both the same network, you can talk to people using Google Hangouts from Google Talk. I've seen lots of speculation that they're going to shut down the XMPP interface we use, but I've seen nothing from Google regarding this.

I realize Wikipedia posts may be changed, but the chunk talking about it's History of interoperability appears to indicate that Google may kill off the XMPP support in May 2014, which we've already passed. So that would imply that Google may now kill off the XMPP connection at any time to disable support(without warning). It's also hard to find much documentation talking about this through Google's systems as almost everything related to GTalk now redirects to the Hangouts system.

So... This could blindside anyone who relies on it at anytime.

I don't think wikipedia is the place to look for Google announcements.

That's not how I read it. The page says "some or all interoperability". I understand this as talking about XMPP federation (ie. a Google Talk user being able to talk to a user connected to a non-Google XMPP server).

I agree on the Wikipedia thing, though I'm still sifting through the references trying to see if I can find some direct links that would give more certainty about what extent they are talking about. Anything I look for directly elsewhere has kept redirecting to a Hangouts getting started page.

I initially read the whole line as them removing the XMPP protocol from Hangouts serverside. Though I now can see it the way you mean as well with regards to federation.
