User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_8_4) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/28.0.1500.95 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Mac OS X 10.8: Use thunderbird to access gmail and an exchange mail server. Run TB as per "normal" mail client operations. Actual results: After 10 minutes, memory repeatedly spikes and OSX must use virtual swap memory. (8GB Physical RAM on laptop) Expected results: Memory usage should not consume all available RAM, consuming 5GB of RAM (no other applications being launched by the user) Note: I followed the steps here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems#Memory_Leaks It is on step 10 where I performed the "diagnostic log/file a bug" procuedure.
Thanks for the log. Nothing illuminating unfortunately. Are you a recent new install? Or recently updated? Please post contents of help | troubleshooting

New application installation, data migrated from my Win7 computer by moving the profile directory and creating a soft-link to it's new location. I've uploaded my troubleshooting info. Thanks!
Please try the version 23 beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/
Summary: Memory usage is more than expected → High memory usage of profile migrated from win7 to Mac
I've download and installed TB23. The first run was identical to 17, i.e., memory spikes, goes into swap all free memory consumed and remains allocated even after quitting TB. Reboot. Second boot; better, though my used memory goes from 3300MB to 7800MB over a 10 minute period (though not into swap this time) Memory remains allocated after quitting TB. I ran an instruments record trace of memory usage. It's 165MB but I can upload it if you're interested. Should I just scrap my data store and start over?
> Should I just scrap my data store and start over? Yeah. If all your mail was in imap accounts then recreate the accounts and settings, and the only thing you need to copy manually is address book file. Done. Fresh profile/data, still seeing the memory usage rocket. Memory rockets particularly after TB has downloaded my IMAP mail account (which goes back to 2006) FYI: I disabled spotlight indexing on the mail store, since I don't really need that feature.
I have, as noted in my original report.
please save to disk a couple samples of about:memory (on the help | troubleshooting page) and attach to the bug report.
Kyle, do you still see this when using Thunderbird 24?

No; the memory is much better behaved now; performance improvement is hard to miss. Well done — nice work.

Thanks for the update, and even more for closing the bug on your own! FWIW, the differential between the two memory reports is nominal, nothing near comment 5. ├──67.55 MB (253.02%) -- maildb │ ├──40.83 MB (152.93%) ── database(imap://kyle.skrinak%40gmail.com@imap.googlemail.com/%5BGmail%5D/Important) [+] │ ├──27.62 MB (103.47%) ── database(imap://kyle.skrinak%40gmail.com@imap.googlemail.com/Skrinak%20Creative) [+]
