Reproducible on Firefox 24 beta 5 (buildID: 20130822154523) Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 Reproducible on latest Aurora (buildID: 20130823004003) Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:25.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/25.0 Reproducible on latest Nightly (buildID: 20130822030204) Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:26.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/26.0 Steps to reproduce: 1. Open Firefox 2. Turn on Messenger Firefox 3. Turn off the chat on the settings button bellow the friends list. 4. Open a chat window and write something. Expected results: Unable to open a window chat and can`t write to anyone unless the turn on chat in each chat window is activated. Actual results: A warning is displayed on the chat window ("To message your friends, turn on chat.") but the messages can still be sent. Notes: 1. The issue reproduces on Windows and Mac OS X. 2. The issue also reproduces on Firefox 17.0.1
Can you confirm if chats are actually arriving to the other user? When I try this, yes the chat window still opens, but it has a notification bar to ask me to turn on chat to send messages to my friends. I can still type messages but they don't seem actually arrive on the recipients end unless chat is turned on. As Facebook is serving this content I think this is likely a UX bug on their end.

I confirm, on all OS's we've tested, the messages sent while chat is turned off are arriving. If the chat is off, the friends on the side bar appears grayed out, but the chat windows can be opened and chat is possible. If the SocialAPI is not active, chatting while chat is off is possible only in the chat windows already opened. (turn on chat - write messages - turn off chat - the messages can still be sent).
FWIW, this is all on Facebook's side - the socialapi provides no facility for turning chat off, so it's up to the providers.
SocialAPI was removed from Firefox 57 and is no longer available in any current release.
