User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:23.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/23.0 (Beta/Release)
Build ID: 20130814063812
Steps to reproduce:
Installed Firefox 23.0.1 upgrading the 20 version
Actual results:
Firefox icon on my Desktop and in Quick Launch changed to new one, but not with transparent backgroud - there's a white square around the orange panda logo.
Expected results:
Firefox icon on my Desktop and in Quick Launch changed to new one, but that one should have had transparent backgroud - there shouldn't have appeared a white square around the orange panda logo.

Hmm, I searched Bugzilla but couldn't find any similar bugs, so this must not be a widespread problem. I'm not sure where to file this. Presumably it's a problem with the icon itself, in combination with your version of Windows.
Sean, Stephen, do you know if something related to transparency changed in the new icon that would cause this?

Summary: white background → New Firefox app icon lacks transparency, has white background, on Windows XP 32-bit
Now I tried to reproduce the problem on another computer with WinXP, but the icon was OK. So I tried to lower the system color depth from 32bit to 16bit and the problem occured again.
So the problem with the icon occures when using 16bit color depth only.
The original problem occured on the computer I accessed using Remote Desktop where I use lower color depth than normally because of the connection speed.
When I switch to 16bit colors on Win7, everything seems all right there with the icons.

Random note, since I saw this just after looking at bug 901565. The old firefox.ico icon included 256-color and 16-color BMPs in the icon (for 16x16, 32x32, 48x48), the new version only truecolor BMPs (for 16x16, 32x32, 48x48) and a PNG (for 256x256). Wonder if it can't deal with the PNG transparency, and was using a BMP flavor before?
