The "Message/Mark/As Read" shortcut is the only one that can be
accessed without qualifier. Having menu item shortcut to be available
without any qualifier is a bit dangerous, as it increases the possibility
of accidental function activation (it's ain't that hard to hit 'm' by mistake
, i.e. trying to press space bar etc). That should be fixed by adding a
qualifier for that shortcut.
There used to be more shortcuts without qualifiers in mail/news. Mark All read
used to be 'A' and I used it a lot or newsgroups, now it's switched to
ctrl-shift-C I tend to use the drop down menu on the mark button instead. So I
do like keyboard shortcuts without qualifiers when there is no need for them
(i.e. no text entry), however I guess the reason they were removed was because
people could hit them by mistake and as this is the only one that remains then
it probably should go too (although remember this shortcut doesn't have such
devastating consequences as Mark All Read as it only affects a single message).

Agreed. 4.x used Command+/ (which we probably can't use again, since it's not
very good i18n-wise).
