I am running Firefox with a different GNU/Linux user account than the desktop environment, so the folder created in ~/Desktop of the Firefox user didn't show up on the GUI desktop, so I wouldn't know there was a backup even if I pay attention to the UI.
Looks like an edge-case not covered by the original design, moving this to Trunk.

I wonder cannot Firefox have "Restore original profile" feature and UI only when it's launched with refreshed profile (i.e., only when there is a backup in desktop folder)?

Marking this as an enhancement that could be considered for the UI in the future.
