>>Project/Request Title:
State of Mozilla
>>Project Overview:
State of Mozilla represents the summary of what Mozilla has accomplished, and where Mozilla is headed, and is published every year as the content that accompanies the public release of our financials. Because the release of our financials causes broad coverage across tech press, this content helps generate accurate and positive stories about what Mozilla has accomplished/will accomplish with the revenue.
>>Creative Specs & Deliverables:
The request for the brand team is to film interviews with six Mozilla execs and distill each into a 1-3 minute video summarizing a core initiative for Mozilla. The final videos would then be embedded on the State of Mozilla website.
Here are the execs and topics - these may shift (particularly the topics) once we start aligning with executives:
* Mitchell on the Nature of Mozilla and our community (Mozilla's relevance today and new ways the community is growing and impacting the world. Based on her Summit talk)
* Jay on Firefox OS (Mozilla executing on new initiatives in the business landscape in a relevant, meaningful way. Based on Summit content where applicable)
* Brendan on the future of the Web (new technology initiatives that impact the Web of the future in gaming, entertainment, security and mobile)
* Mark on Webmaker/literacy (how are we shaping the curriculum of the future)
* Harvey on Health of the Web and privacy/policy considerations (based on his Summit talk)
* Johnath on Firefox/Fx for Android - how our flagship product is continuing to break new ground. This interview could also be merged in Brendan's video.
I picture the final videos being clips of the executives speaking, interspersed with relevant images accompanying their voiceover.
The PR team will take the lead on drafting text on the State of Mozilla page (a few paragraphs of lead-in and title/one-sentence descriptor for each video), but would help to have copy review from brand team to liven it up.

Hi all,
With Summit behind us, I'm turning attention to State of Mozilla and wanted to provide an update. I had been sending info via email but will stick to the Bug for team-wide updates going forward since all the key people are looped in, and it will be easy to track.
Mike Alexis was kind enough to map out the production timeline in a Smartsheet, for those who haven't seen: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=ec24af610c5b4b4c9221ef420ab75df9. Here are the main targets:
- Film video interviews with execs: week of Oct. 14th
- Post-production on video interviews: week of Oct. 21st
- Execs review/finalize video content: Oct. 28th-Nov. 5th
- Final video assets ready by Fri, Nov. 8th
- Publish: Weds, Nov. 20th
The most immediate needs and next steps:
- I'm adding Rainer and Spencer to this bug to verify availability for filming exec interviews. I have an hour blocked for filming on Brendan's calendar on Tues, Oct. 15th and can take the lead on securing times for the other 5 execs, but want to confirm when Rainer/Spencer have openings that week before I do too much there. (Rainer/Spencer - maybe we can have a call today to discuss?).
- I spoke with Anders Pers this morning about contracting with us to manage the video interviews and post-production, and he had concerns about how effective he could be in this role as an outsider (after dealing with a lot of exec pushback during Summit preso development), and said he'd consider it further and get back to me later this afternoon on whether he'd like to move forward. Will update on what I hear.
I'm on PTO Weds-Fri this week, so want to make sure we're all aligned today, and hopefully able to lock in more exec interview filming times. Please ping me with any questions.
Thanks,
Mike

I had a good convo with Rainer today, and he hit on a (painfully obvious) solution to make this project even more efficient. Since we have high-quality video from Summit of all these execs saying essentially what we want them to say for SOM, let's draw from their Summit talks rather than scheduling a series of new one-on-one discussions. I spoke with John and Leslie, and they're on board with this as well.
Since this would remove much of the logistics around scheduling, managing and editing new interviews, I don't see a need to get Anders involved (I can work directly with Rainer/Spencer on their edits).
Next steps: Rainer is going to seek out the high-quality videos of keynote sessions from the execs we had in mind, and will create and share a sample video of Mitchell's opening talk this week so we can gauge how it would look.
Rainer, please share that initial cut with both Leslie and John since I'll be on PTO.

Awesome, thanks Rainer. Mike, can you advise as to how the content feels to you?
A few quick notes from me:
- not a concern for now, but before we finalize any of these we'll want to come up with a more graphically interesting intro/outro
- the sound is slightly out of sync with the picture
- it's a bit longer than Mike had originally requested...will let him provide direction as to whether that's ok or not
Rainer, do you have access to the footage of the other keynotes? If not, can you start the process to get it?

Apologies for the late response to Rainer's video. Overall this is what I had in mind. Here are my specific thoughts:
- I liked how fluidly Mitchell's discussion was edited, in that it flowed well and didn't sound/look like it was bouncing around her talk.
- Agree with John that we'll need a better intro/outro graphic (just a Mozilla logo would work for me, at least for the outro).
- The proportion of showing Mitchell vs. showing images seemed about right. But aside from the four pillars, I'd prefer to replace visuals that look like slides. Better to show just photos if we can, for example can we get the original of the "teaching" image at 1:35 and show just a high-quality version of that, rather than showing it on a slide? And remove the World image at 1:58.
- I'm fine with the length being a bit over three minutes, although since Harvey also covered some policy in his Health of the Web talk, I'd like to see what we get from that and then decide if we want to take out the policy portion of Mitchell's video.
Rainer, per our discussion the other day I know you're tracking down videos of the other execs. Please let me know if there's any more input you need on Mitchell's video, or another way I can help you at this point. I'd be happy to talk through the next phase once you have more Summit content in hand.
My hope is that we can send draft cuts of the videos to execs for input next week. That would keep us on track with the production schedule (https://app.smartsheet.com/b/publish?EQBCT=ec24af610c5b4b4c9221ef420ab75df9)
Thanks!

I'm adding a request for the Creative team that Carmen made: she wants a static image (logo?) for State of Mozilla to include in social media posts about it (she's found videos don't drive engagement).
I'm picturing the logo also being used in place of the embedded video we included last year in the upper right of the page (wrapped around the intro text), but open to what the Creative team feels is best.
How about I open a separate Facebook bug and link it to this one?
I would really prefer not a logo, but something engaging - like a quote from the report, or something (which we can chose after we get further there.) I'll also look at the videos and see if I see a social-worthy snippet or something.
That way, we can track
Facebook graphic bug 931958
Not sure if it's a blocker or a depends on bug. How to include that?
Comment 10•12 years ago
|
||
That all makes sense to me...we can discuss the specifics in the other bug (one thing I'll say here: it shouldn't be a logo, but I think we're in agreement on that already), but consider it on the radar.
I would say that bug (931958) is a blocker for this bug (922211).

Following a design meeting today with Sean/John/Mike A/Jen, I'm sharing the latest versions of our six executive videos from Summit. NONE OF THESE ARE FINAL YET - Rainer's still tweaking some, and I'm getting approvals from execs on others. Posting here so people can get a sense of what will be on the page (and so Sean can add as design placeholders). I will post final videos on this bug once execs give me approval.
Draft videos (all are unlisted):
Mitchell: http://youtu.be/19YkpSWdSAM
Jay: http://youtu.be/XL21E1HzQ7Y
Harvey: http://youtu.be/szt33EZa1qU
Mark: http://youtu.be/MSJOGYQbsIU
Johnathan: http://youtu.be/wbnRdCqt0I8
Brendan: http://youtu.be/xRGBZ2l69vI
Other videos that will be embedded:
FxOS documentary: http://youtu.be/ODloPGhgWQk
"I am a Mozillian" Summit recap: getting source video, not on YT yet.
@SEAN - I was able to get Mitchell's confirmation on the quote she wants at the top of the page, so you can design it now: "We are champions of a Web where people know more, do more and do better" -Mitchell Baker

Hi Mike,
The videos look amazing. Once they're final final, send me over the files and I'll get them unlisted on the official YouTube page with SEO tags. Also, let me know if there are specific descriptions you already have for each.
Thanks,

Thanks, Michaela! I'll include a title and description of the video when I add the final link for each. Want to make sure execs are OK with the content first - for example, Mitchell requested we use a different part of her speech so her video will now be very different from the link above.

Design looks great to me. One addition - T\there will be about 2 more paragraphs of text just above the financial statements, so you can add some Lorum Ipsum in the same light-shaded background as the financials.
I also like the hover effect for video captions, and based on the text size you'd like to use, can you let me know the optimal number of words for each caption?
I had been thinking that an FAQ wouldn't be needed, but did some digging back into the past State of Mozilla reports and found we've done one every year, so I'm now thinking we should continue it. Many of the answers will be essentially the same as last year's FAQ (http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/annualreport/2011/faq/), but I'm not going to make it as long.
*WEB PROD TEAM* - hopefully adding an FAQ wouldn't cause much work, I'm picturing a text-only site that's modeled exactly on last year's format, but with blue question text matching Sean's design rather than the red from last year. I can pull together some draft text if you need it to start mocking this up.

I'm not sure what would be appearing on hover. Do you have an example of what content would be displayed there? Is it something that appears while the video is playing? Anything that overlays the video while it's playing could interfere with the controls. Or if it's something like supplemental info/links related to the video we might have to position it where it doesn't cover the controls.
Unless you mean the controls themselves, and we could certainly do our own custom video controls that would appear in a slid-up manner like that, though replacing the browser's native controls does mean a bit more effort and testing.
If we're talking about captions for accessibility or subtitles for other languages, requiring a user to keep their mouse over the video to keep that content visible would be bad (and would still interfere with controls).

I was shooting for the end of this week but got sidetracked, and now I think Tuesday is more realistic for final site copy. I'm flying to London tomorrow evening and shooting to get the text sent around before I get on the plane. Would like Matej to make sure it's on-brand, and Erica Sackin and Mark Surman also wanted to give it a read.
The public FAQ is more of a wild card for when I'll have final text; I need to verify with Leslie where that signoff needs to come from. But most of it will be based on language from past years' FAQs so hopefully it doesn't get held up.

https://docs.google.com/a/mozilla.com/document/d/1YUnQ-fQm8Iy-o8g_a8_effhyT0lczSJgW4Jtm7ASmYc/edit
Seeking review/approval from these folks in particular (and hopefully in this general order): Matej, Leslie (who I'm in London with now), Erica Sackin, Mark Surman and Mitchell. But all are welcome to read and weigh in. Please make edits directly in the Gdoc so I can track who did what. It should be editable by anyone with a Moz account, but if I need to share with anyone's Gmail instead please let me know.

TIMING UPDATE: NEW TARGET DATE FOR STATE OF MOZILLA
The comms team reviewed State of Mozilla as part of our workweek, and because there are a few other announcements we want to put out early next week, and we could use the extra approval time, **we're pushing back the publish date for State of Mozilla back two days to Thursday, Nov. 21st.""
I don't think this would negatively impact any of the creative work happening now, but if you have concerns or need clarity on anything please let me know.

Mitchell: http://youtu.be/mgcyJstibZU
Jay: http://youtu.be/xGvldhYCvmY
Still trying to get Brendan's approval for his. Kim said she'll do what she can to nail that down today.
I think we're also very close on approval for copy of the website, and the FAQ still needs more review so my goal is to have those signed off on Monday.

Only one video on the SoM page still needs to be finalized: the Firefox OS journey. Rainer is making a final tweak and we should have it finished on Monday.
The website text and FAQ are getting close. Jim has added his financial answers to the FAQ, and I talked through the docs with Jay and sent to him again for closer review. I just let SC know that they need to make edits or requests by EOD Monday PST, after which we'll consider the text final to complete Web Prod.

I got a call from Jay this morning, and after watching the Firefox OS journey video, he's not comfortable including it in State of Mozilla because he thinks the tone is wrong for an external audience: essentially that we're beating our chests too much, when we still have so much to prove.
WEB PROD TEAM: Please let me know if this change (taking out FxOS video, but leaving the "I am a Mozillian" video) might put us at risk for delaying the launch. If so, I can go back to Jay with that risk and propose a revised video as an alternative. The time I would like to push the site live is 6 am PST / 2 pm GMT on Thursday, Nov 21st.
I will draft new site text leading into the video in the meantime.

Attached is the website copy. I've highlighted portions of the text that MIGHT change because I haven't been able to get Mark Surman to sign off on them. Erica Sackin is chasing him and I let her know we need it in the next hour or so, or we're going forward with it. I'll update the bug if there are any edits, but they would be very minor, so you can go forward with this version.
One question for Web Prod: will this be the final State of Mozilla URL? http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/foundation/annualreport/2012 (same as last year's with an updated year).
