to summarize accounts: two pop, 7 imap to the same ISP, and one gmail.

When do you get unresponsive script - only on startup?
And, does problem reproduce if you have started in safe mode?
 https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
After restart in safe node I have got couple times similar message:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js:1374

Then after still the original message in normal and safe mode:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js:1401
I have 'Thunderbird Adress Book Synchronisation Extension 1.9.105.1160" (disables) installed, which does not work either. Could that be connected somehow?
This extension is to synchronize the address book with Nokia Suite 3.8.48.
When is this happening? On startup?

On starup only i am getting one of the above error messages.

George, Does problem reproduce if you use https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/23.0b1/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2023.0b1.exe ??

Backup your Thunderbird profile before using this older unreleased version. mozbackup is one good choice

I guess George is gone. In any event, if this does not happen when addon is not installed then the cause+fix rests with the author of the addon

George may be gone but I have a similar problem - for about a year!

Downloading, opening, and deleting emails can take a minute apiece, and sometimes I get a notice like:

Script: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js:3177

The number changes.

I have tried turning off all add-ons and extensions.

I have a second email account, which works just fine. Security settings are the same for both.

Any suggestions?
Hello,
I'm using Thunderbird 42.0 (beta) right now, but have for a long while this error message each startup (German):
"Ein Skript auf dieser Seite ist eventuell beschäftigt oder es antwortet nicht mehr. Sie können das Skript jetzt stoppen oder fortsetzen, um zu sehen, ob das Skript fertig wird.

Skript: chrome://messenger/content/mailWindowOverlay.js:1429"

I even created a new profile to make sure it doesn't depend on a Add-On or buggy settings.
As I don't know how to get the log file, I made a Screenshot of the error console:
http://abload.de/image.php?img=bugreportnqqru.jpg

I'm using 14 IMAP Accounts, that is the only cause for very slow Startup and Error message.
I am using Thunderbird 38.4 on a machine running Vista. This happens nearly everytime Thunderbord starts.

(machines of vista vintage are probably underpowered these days, esp. with regard to installed memory)

All,
Do you have Thunderbird set to start automatically when Windows start?
Do you have pop accounts?
Does problem go away if you change Thunderbird to not check for new mail every N minutes?

Does problem go away if you have done the following... Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled
- win10 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/change-startup-settings-in-windows-10
- win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode
- win7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7
- XP http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx
Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode
- http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode
Going back to your first response, I WAS using McAfee. The problem was that I had more than one email account in Thunderbird. Blogs on McAfee had a number of people with the same problem - slow access to all but their primary email account.

I solved the problem by switching to Norton. That probably doesn't explain all of the above, but it might be a clue.
> All,
> Do you have Thunderbird set to start automatically when Windows start?
No only manually start, problem occurs every start of Thunderbird.
> Do you have pop accounts?
No, all are IMAP.
> Does problem go away if you change Thunderbird to not check for new mail
> every N minutes?
It only happens on start of Thunderbird. Not while it's in background or checking for mails afterward.

No, still the same.

I reckon it has something to do with Chat Accounts feature in Thunderbird. Just a good guess considering the error message has something to do with "messenger". So I hit 'Tools' -> 'Options' and in the menu, I went to 'Chat' and changed the first drop-down to 'Keep my chat accounts offline'. Not sure if that helps but we will see.
