The short month names in French are ending in a '.', which makes the status bar show

oct., operator

which is looking weird.

Can the short months (and possibly days) be used without the '.'?

 REDUNDANT FULL STOP AFTER THE MONTH
 
  REPRODUCING PROCEDURES:
 1. Open the notifications.
 2. Look at the date in upper left corner. There's a redundant full stop after the month name.

I'm trying to have an authoritative answer for this because there are two conflicting rules. I found people arguing over this on the Internet: http://www.etudes-litteraires.com/forum/topic40309-abreviation-suivie-dune-virgule.html

But as far as I can tell, while it looks weird it's how it should be done in correct French :/

It's probably correct in Italian too, but the point is if you really need that comma, since you could just remove it or replace it with something else (e.g. "-").

I think I prefer the former.

24 oct. Operator

Same here. This doesn’t even look weird to me:
24 oct., Operator

I tend to think that this abbreviation rule applies to most west-European languages but few people care about it. The French community has always taken typography very seriously, they can be trusted for that.

Same here.
The comma should be preserved in correct French, but if one really need to keep only one character for any good reason, the period must absolutely be kept as an abbrev. sign.

"24 mai Operator" will look weird. There is no "." for mai, juin, août

"24 mai - Operator" is acceptable to me

Just to clarify: Disagreement and WONTFIX is a totally fine option, as with most bugs that get filed on software.

Even more so if it's based on a good discussion.

Since we are already out of space for some network names ("France telecom mobile" does not fit for instance) and that the current string is correct in French, I'd keep it as is.

(It is more convenient to comment from a PC than from a Peak :) )
