Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.9; rv:24.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/24.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20130910160258 Steps to reproduce: Attached a file ending ODT (OpenDocument text) Actual results: File was attached to the mail with MIME type OpenDocument (ODF) file attached as application/x-zip Expected results: File should be attached to the mail with MIME type application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text
Go into Thunderbird > Preferences > Attachments. Do you see an entry matching OpenDocument with "(application/x-zip; .odt)"? If yes, remove it and see if it resolves the issue. Also see bug 503309 on how such mis-associations can be picked up.
Oh, indeed, that was much easier than I thought - I had two entries for ODT, one with the correct MIME type, one with ZIP. Sorry for the noise!

No problem, marking as a duplicate though as some mechanism could have prevented you from picking up the wrong MIME association.
