The location field looks funky/corrupted though it still works fine, visually it
looks broken up. This seems to only happen under the Modern theme. It also seems
to affect graphics elements in the web page (a repeated broken up pattern). I
have taken screenshots under both classic and modern, where can I send these?
Reporter: You can attach it to the bug using the "create attach link"
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/createattachment.cgi?id=93522.

Have you tried a new profile (run "mozilla -profilemanager") ?
I tried the profilemanager option, there was no effect.
There were quite a few problems with the modern theme, but I think they are
fixed. Reporter: can you verify this on a nightly build?
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/latest/
I installed the mozilla-2001080814-0_rh7.i386.rpm (the title bar gives a
different build id 2001080811) and the same problem occurs.
I know I've seen this bug before with a bunch of screenshots. It was said that
this happens with large fonts. I can't find the bug right now.
I was thinking about bug 80292 which affected the Personal Toolbar (it was just
fixed). The black marks are exactly the same though, so I'm guessing this bug
might have been fixed by this checkin too.
Is this an issue still on newer nightlies?
Yes it's still there, tried it with 8/28 nightly. I even moved my .mozilla
profile to see whether that was corrupting anything, it wasn't. BTW, when I
moved my old .mozilla back over the newly created one, my previous settings
weren't restored. Where is mozilla pulling the profile from?
If you did the prefs move while running mozilla, tough luck.

I can't see this on my 2001083108 build, but I believe it could be happening. If
you rm -rf ~/.mozilla and _not_ migrate your prefs, same problem?

How do we reproduce the problem?

I am seeing this bug with 0.9.4 on RH7.1 but only with XFree86 version 4 or
above. I am currently running 4.1 and still seeing it but if I use 3.3.6 it
goes away.
What video card do you have?
I'm running RH7.1 with Xfree86 4 and have never seen this.
I have seen it with ATI Rage LT and ATI Rage Mobility so it is probably the ATI
driver from XFree 4. Certainly the XF86_MACH64 driver from 3.3.6 doesn't have
the problem. I have also noticed the problem using the new foggy theme that is
in the Netscape 6.1 theme park but the classic theme is fine so that is what I
am using now.
Shane: is the problem the exact same one as the screenshot shows? And can you
test with the latest nightly?

pedrum: What video card and X version are you using?

I'm a bit unsure of how to proceed - if it's an XFree bug, perhaps we need to
releasenote it.

It probably is an XFree bug in the ATI driver and it still exists in the 4.1.0.1
xserver I am running. I'll try and get a nightly down and see what that does
too. The appearance is exactly as seen in the screen shot, corruption of the
lower part of the location field. If I shade and unshade the window the effect
goes away with the redraw, or it may appear if it wasn't there.

I'll try the nightly once I get it and see how I get on.
Just got the nightly (2001092606) and the problem is still there.

I am no expert on Mozilla themes, but I still can't understand why one
particular theme should be affected. If it's hardware/driver corruption, then
shouldn't this happen on every theme? Is there anything special about the Modern
theme?
Summary: Corrupted location field under modern theme (0.9.3) → Corrupted location field under modern theme on XFree86 4.x and ATI card
Okay, since we can see clearly it's an XFree86 bug, could one of you
please file a bug against XFree and stick a bug# here (they have a
bugtracker at http://www.xfree86.org/cgi-bin/bugform.cgi) so we can have
record of it.

This is truly quite wierd; the Modern theme probably just uses some
function that triggers corruption in the driver. Hewitt, any idea of
what it might be?

I have submitted a report of the problem to the xfree86 bugtracker and included
the URL to get back to this report.
Are we sure this isn't bug 80292? It was reopened...
Christopher, I don't kow. A) this problem only seems to happen with
people using ATI cards (good work on figuring that out guys) B) The
screenshot showing the problem is similar, but a tiny bit different.

Since I can read Jason's comment on bug 80292 that says he thought it
was a problem with ATI Rage XL, it could be a dupe. But then Erik says
his is an S3. I don't know, really. If you want you can be my guest and
dupe it, as long as your dupe text contains a reference to the
ATI-specificity of this bug here. :)
This is an imagelib issue, not themes.

There is a problem with the Xfree 4 ati server. Disable the linear video memory
aperture with option "nolinear" in the "Device" section and the problem goes away.
