When the black version of this icon is as is from the pre Australis world, why can't the white version be ?

Where is this magical white version of which you speak? I don't see it e.g. here: http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-aurora/source/browser/themes/windows/Toolbar-inverted.png?force=1 and there are no other matching image files for 'group' or 'panorama'.

Oh, it's at http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/browser/themes/windows/tabview/tabview-inverted.png because that makes total sense. Ugh. And we could temporarily hackaround but we should still get this icon to be in Toolbar/Toolbar-inverted.png and deal with it the same way we deal with the other icons.

I don't see the panorama icon on a clean profile, only if creating some groups first. What's the expected behavior here?

Hm, this was just fixed by bug 956130. I didn't see that this was already filed.
