I'm not sure under what circumstances this is happening, but it has happened to me on at least two occaisions. I've gone to Help > About Nightly, the about window appears and an update begins. I don't get asked to check for updates. In preferences, updates are set to "never check for updates".
Dupe of bug 950357? Or INVALID given bug 600500? Not sure, but Felipe or Steffen should know!
Bug 950357 looks like what I want, and it's fixed. I should update. :)
