I can't tell whether this is important or completely irrelevant, so here it is to let someone else decide:

First message (not error or warning, just a message) on the error console is
"Failed to load XPCOM component: /home/<my_username_is_not_of_interest_here>/bin/instantbird/components/libmozgnome.so"

The file exists. Using Ubuntu 9.10, 64bit.

This is probably because this file depends on a library in the system and the 32bit version of it is not installed on your 64bit system.

If think this component has some use but is not absolutely needed for Instantbird to work.

A quick look at the Mozilla source code makes me believe this is used to produce libnotify notifications.

If that's indeed the case, it might be the source of bug 953801 (bio 358) ("Fail to use libnotify"). It's exactly the same system that both bug 953827 (bio 384) and 358 occur on.

Notifications failed to use libnotify (cf duplicate bug 953801 (bio 358)) on an Ubuntu 9.04, 64bit system.
This is the reason.
Bug 953836 (bio 395) is the cure.
Summary: "Failed to load XPCOM component 'libmozgnome'" message on the error console → Notifications fail to use libnotify; reason: "Failed to load XPCOM component 'libmozgnome'" message on the error console
Is libnotify even used on current nightlies? I thought it was all XUL?
Is this fixed now that we have 64-bit nightlies?

Most likely, yes.
