Windows allows to put overlay icons over the program icon on the task bar, for example to display a certain status.

We could use this to display a unread message count, the currently online status or other things.

I think both of these would be good to have (the circle icon for the status in one corner and an unread count in another?)

Just to save other people the check...that bug is ASSIGNED but hasn't had work done since 2010-06-xx, so we'd need to drive that into toolkit or develop our own support for it.

For an instant messenger, this seems like overkill to me. But I think some users will be extremely excited about this.

Update: this bug is fixed now and the target milestone is Mozilla10.

Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
