When I have tried instantbird for the first time I have added an ICQ account.
As the account has connected I have recognized many entries in the contact list were displayed as uins rather than nicknames.
I have started looking why this is happening and then I have found out contacts I have added using official ICQ clients about 9 or 10 years ago are displayed correctly while contacts I've added after 2005 when I switched to Miranda-IM all are displayed as uins.
I'm guessing some IM clients such as Miranda-IM and QIP which are most popular in central and east europe don't save nicknames to the server side contacts list while other clients such as official icq clients, pidgin and instantbird do.
Please note pidgin also suffers from this issue but it has ability to view contacts info from the contact list context menu where it retrieves nick name from the server. So in order to fix pidgin contact list so it will display proper display names for the icq contacts I have to see the contact info once for each contact.
I see user info would be nice feature in instaandbird as well for exaample in order to display an xmpp vcaard or detaails about any other protocol contct. I assumed this will be solved after a while and did not taken this as a problem. However I have seen it reported as a comment to one of the blog articles so I'm am posting all the details I know here.

Thanks for the feedback! If I'm not mistaken, this is the feature requested in bug 954393 (bio 959). It's good to be aware of another situation where it would be really useful.

Definatelly bug 954393 (bio 959) talks about the pidgin dialog I'm reffering to in the original report.
Another suggestion avoiding implementing full dialog which would just fix this issue alone without other things is ability to retrieve the nick from the users details if its empty and if the protocol in question supports it.
So in order to fix a contact I would just rightclick a contact and use rename functionality to make the display name empty.
Is this doable in js? which functionality of purplexcomm do I need? If it wouldn't be too difficult I might try to create a concept. Yes surry I am not going to set a full dev enviromment but if this can easily be hacked into javascript files i'm interested in fixing it. Of course I need some help.

Good to hear you might want to work on this! I suspect fixing bug 954393 (bio 959) would be the easier route. But do come to #instantbird (on irc.mozilla.org) with any questions you have and to discuss this further!
