In [1] Cor-el brought up the idea of showing the username when hovering over a display name. Since several contributors can have the same display name, this might be a simple and unobtrusive way of quickly distinguishing users. In reality the avatar would be different in most cases, so there should not be too many situations where this would be an issue. That's also why it would be okay for this not to work on mobile.
