We want to ship Firefox Mobile with a good list of search engines for Latvian. We're going to work towards this in three phases. First, the localization team and the l10n drivers will look at the market for the language and come up with a good set of search providers. Raivis, we'll need your input on this, the guidelines for making recommendations are on <https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Productization_guide>. For en-US, we currently use this set, to which we can fall back in the case of lacking localized alternatives: > Google (mobile version), Yahoo, Bing, Amazon, Twitter, Wikipedia (slightly different to desktop, 32x32 icon) We may also want to go with just a subset of the en-US engines, if that's more appropriate for the local market. Once we decide to use a particular search engine (and we test it on a mobile device), l10n drivers will contact the owner and ask for permission, and for specifics like proper search flags. Raivis, we'll likely need your help to at least get the contact information. For search engines that we already ship with on desktop and that you would like to include in mobile as well, the permission is not needed. Consider using a mobile version of the engine if one is available. Also, please make yourself familiar with instructions regarding the <Description/> element at <https://wiki.mozilla.org/L10n:Integrated_Search_Instructions>. For mobile, we'll want 64x64 size images, too. Once we have a specification on what the search engines for Latvian should look like, flod (Francesco Lodolo) and the localization team will work on an implementation on that. flod will create and attach patches for the desired changes and get them reviewed. After a successful review, flod will land them. Raivis, if you're interested, you could create the patches, too. You'd ask flod for review on those before landing. Please don't commit any modifications in browser/searchplugins to the hg repository without a patch reviewed by flod, Stas, Axel or someone else appointed by the l10n drivers. The data here is sensitive to users and our search partners, thus the extra care here. The Latvian team and flod will be driving this bug to completion.
I see that Latvian users would benefit the most from the default set of search engines + ss.lv + salidzini.lv ss.lv is used in desktop version of Firefox and is a popular classifieds site in Latvia. salidzini.lv is also used in desktop version and provides comparison of internet shop offerings Are there any recomendations on how many search engines should there be? We might exclude Bing and possibly Yahoo as well as they are not as popular as Google for searches in Latvia.
The current list for en-US is amazondotcom google twitter wikipedia yahoo bing 8 searchplugins (6+2) is definitely big, especially on Mobile. salidzini.lv Does this classify as e-commerce? We could use it instead of Amazon, especially if it's more relevant (several locales dropped Amazon because of shipping problems). There's also another problem with this searchplugin http://transvision-beta.mozfr.org/productization/?locale=lv&product=browser Icon seems to be completely different from the one on the website. http://www.salidzini.lv/favicon.ico We'll also need a bigger icon for Mobile (64px now and 256px for later this year). Is your team in touch with them? Can you try to contact them and ask for an updated icon, explaining what we plan to do? It would also be useful to understand if they have a mobile version of the site (design is not responsive as far as I can see). ss.lv We'll need 64px and 256px icons too. wikipedia Will be replaced with the localized version yahoo, bing I would chose one of them (the more relevant in your area) and keep the total number to 6. Or drop Twitter, if it's not popular in your area, and keep them both. That's your call ;-)
As Salidzini is more popular in Latvia than Amazon we could go with the following plugins: google twitter wikipedia ss.lv salidzini.lv I have logos for salidzini.lv, but ss.lv have not responded so far. They do not have a phone to call to. But as their logo is quite simple I could remake it bigger. SS.lv has m.ss.lv as their mobile version salidzini.lv has salidzini.lv/m/, but it seems a bit like work in progress. Let me know the next steps.
salidzini.lv: please attach here updated logos ss.lv: we definitely them to answer, both for logo and which version of the website (and params) to use in queries

I have found high quality logo for SS.lv. will try to contact ss.lv. Can we determine witch version gives the best user experience and most value to the users.
(In reply to Raivis Dejus from comment #9) > I have found high quality logo for SS.lv. > > will try to contact ss.lv. Can we determine witch version gives the best > user experience and most value to the users. Hi Raivis, Have you heard anything back from ss.lv?
No There has been no replay. Any suggestions on how to proceed?
(In reply to Raivis Dejus from comment #11) > No There has been no replay. > > Any suggestions on how to proceed? Have you followed up with them? If you think it would help to CC me or flod on a follow up email to them, that would great. Do you know anyone at SS.lv that you can contact personally?
The only communication method with them is a contact form on their website. I have submitted my request there two times. I could try to send email to the address that is associated with the domain whois information. There is also a phone number to try. I think that one of reasons for not answering is that there is no clear question. I have asked if we can use their search in our mobile version and if they can provide us with the logos. We have the logos from their android application and we use them in desktop version of Firefox. So in a way we have answers to both of the questions. Do we need consent to use their particular logos? Do we need consent to send users to their mobile version? Do we need consent to use them at all? and if we do not get ir will we have to remove ss.lv as a search plugin?

Raivis, Since they've given approval to be in Firefox desktop, and since you've made a strong effort to get in touch with them, I think we can interpret their approval for Firefox to extend beyond just desktop. Flod will take a look at the logos and create a patch soon. Thank you for your effort!
Jeff, is this yours to review or should I send it to Pike? List is based on comment 3. Wikipedia: updated icon and name to match Wikipedia's one (added "(lt)) ss.lv and salidzini.lv: updated icon to 32px for now, we'll keep the higher resolutions for later These 3 searchplugins can be tested from here http://l10n.mozilla-community.org/~flod/testsp/
