* GOAL: create a page at "webmaker.org/privacy" that contains a gallery of our best teaching resources and content around privacy

* DEADLINE: needs to be ready for Jan 28. To support MoCo Int'l Privacy Day Campaign

* PAGE DESCRIPTION:
** a gallery of Teaching Kits. e.g., an embedded MAKE API query. Displaying kits tagged "privacy" and "teach."
* These will be *curated* by an admin in the MAKE API. We just want a handful of the *best* resources -- not everything.

* NEXT STEPS:

* Kate: can you create a stub for this at webmaker.org/privacy?

* Laura: can you work with Kate to tag your preferred resources appropriately so that they show up in the gallery there once its ready?
* To be ready for Jan 28, we'll need a draft prototype by Jan 21
Flags: needinfo?(laura)
Yep! Hi Kate :) What tags should we use though "teach" and "privacy"? Shouldn't it be "webmaker:teach" and "privacy" so that we don't override a user who is tagging using the weblitmap?

For teaching resources, there's really only the kit I made and one from Karen + team. We can highlight the kit as well as individual activities so the page looks more full. This is 11 resources.

There's more "security" makes, but security != privacy (though I could probably find makes that would fit.)

@Kate - Can you just tell me how many I should dig up, and @Matt your thoughts on just surfacing teaching kits versus surfacing privacy related Makes like https://panaggio.makes.org/thimble/i-believe-in-an-open-web-because-of-privacy ?

(In reply to Laura Hilliger [:epilepticrabbit] from comment #2)

There's two things here:

TAGS:
> Shouldn't it be "webmaker:teach" and "privacy" so that we don't override a
> user who is tagging using the weblitmap?

Yes. That sounds correct.

KATE: please use "webmaker:teach" and "privacy" to generate the gallery
Flags: needinfo?(matt)
2nd thing: CONTENT

* Laura: I've seen a bunch of different links for privacy-related activities and teaching kits floating around. (For example: a nice-looking Lightbeam activity. A kit that pulls a bunch of activities together, etc.) But I've lost track of what the definitive URLs are. It's hard to see them in one place.

* I think *you* should be empowered to figure out what *you* think are the best resources we have so far. You know them better than anyone.

* Can you go ahead and tag the best candidates you think we should use with "webmaker:teach" and "privacy?" You can include:

1) Must-haves. The one or two you mention that we know are best.
2) Could-haves. Stuff you think is interesting or close, but not 100% sure about whether they're high enough quality.

Once that's done, you can update here and I'll review them for QA.

Does that work?
Flags: needinfo?(laura)
@ Kate: can you also provide an estimate on when you can have the first prototype version of this ready?
I can have a page with the search webmaker:teach and privacy by tomorrow. If you want, you can also include a title and subtitle with the page (like on https://webmaker.org/en-US/starter-makes or https://webmaker.org/en-US/teach)

Questions:
- Do you want to order them in a specific way?
- Is the tile format on /teach OK in terms of the meta data that is displayed?
Flags: needinfo?(kate) → needinfo?(matt)
1) TITLE & SUBTITLE
like on https://webmaker.org/en-US/starter-makes or https://webmaker.org/en-US/teach

Great. Yes, let's do this.
Drushka, are you able to write that? If not just let me know and I'm happy to do it.
As basic as: "Tools and resources for teaching privacy on the Web" -- or whatever

2) ORDER
Do you want to order them in a specific way?
It would be nice to have the option, but a requirements.
If we could do it the same as we do on /teach (using the tag-1, tag-2, tag-3 convention) that'd be swell.

3) FORMAT
Is the tile format on /teach OK in terms of the meta data that is displayed?

Yes!
Flags: needinfo?(matt) → needinfo?(erikad)
Hm, it seems that webmaker.org/privacy is already linked to our privacy policy. We need to either rename this to /privacy-policy or use a different URL for this page.

Re: order, if we want to do this, we should use a different tag other than webmaker:teach (i.e. webmaker:privacy)
URL
* Let's do whatever requires the least amount of work. Suggest calling this resources page something like: webmaker.org/privacy-kits instead

* Re: using a different tag. webmaker:privacy sounds just fine.
Yes, happy to write this.

Kate: Please let me know if you have a prototype to look at so I know how much copy to generate.
Flags: needinfo?(erikad) → needinfo?(kate)
This has a new page at privacy-makes with a search on webmaker:privacy.

I want to get it on prod without a navigation link so people can work on content. When we want to show it live, I'll land a patch to add it to the nav
Attachment #8362591 - Flags: review?(jon)
Flags: needinfo?(kate)
@ Drushka: does this give you what you need to write copy?
Not quite. I need to see the page layout and design to know how much to write. Sounds like that's in the works. For now, I'll draft up the basics: what/why/mission/CTA etc.
Here's the copy. Note that it matches MoCo messaging in bug 957095
Matt: It muddies the messaging a bit to ask people to create their own resources. I didn't include that link, but am open to arguments if you feel strongly it should be there.

-------
Green text:
Teach online privacy with Webmaker.

Regular text:
Mozilla believes privacy is a key part of web literacy [https://webmaker.org/en-US/standard]. Here are some great resources for teaching others how to put their privacy first.
-------
Flags: needinfo?(matt)
* This is great.

* Kate: does this give you what you need to ship the prototype page?
Flags: needinfo?(matt)
Yep, can we use webmaker:privacy-1, webmaker:privacy-2, webmaker:privacy-3 etc. and webmaker:privacy for tags though?
* @Kate: we're ok with that. Does that work for you.

r+ with nits, I think there's an unused module you can nuke.

@ Laura: can you ensure the resources you want showing up on this page are now properly tagged in the MakeAPI?

* Kate: what's the next step? Is there a link where we can review on staging?
Summary: Create a gallery page of our best privacy teaching resources at "webmaker.org/privacy" → Create a gallery page of our best privacy teaching resources on webmaker.org
@ Laura: I just updated this blog post we did a while back -- contains links to Chris Lawrence's blog post on the NSA Prism issue and a round-up of other useful links:
https://blog.webmaker.org/privacy

* Will leave with you in case it's got stuff we could re-package into a quick Thimble page -- happy to do that? I could just copy paste the HTML into a teaching kit
@ Matt: Here's the updated link for Chris' post (now on HiveNYC.org) http://hivenyc.org/2013/06/13/nsa-surveillance-revelations-are-a-teachable-moment/
Fixed. Thanks!
Hi - anyone know the timing for the gallery page going live? Just trying to plan for sharing out the link via social media, mentor community call, etc. Is there a hashtag or other landing page to drive people to as well? Thanks!
* The page will be live in time to support Privacy Day on Jan 28 -- which means must be polished, tested and ready by Mon, Jan 27

* Let's aim to have it done done done by this Friday, Jan 24

* Kate says there will be a link on staging for us to test by later today. She'll post it here when its ready.
Flags: needinfo?(kate)
The page is live at this URL: https://webmaker.org/privacy-makes

I also wrote some instructions on how to tag galleries: http://k88hudson.github.io/howdoimakeagalleryonwebmaker. For privacy makes, the keyword is privacy, i.e.

Lead gallery: webmaker:privacy-1, webmaker:privacy-2, etc.
Main tag: webmaker:privacy
Flags: needinfo?(kate)
Note that the lead copy has not landed since it was submitted after the patch went through, I will add it in the next patch.
* Thanks Kate! Once makes are tagged properly in the Make API on live, will they show up here on staging? Or is this staging page pulling from a different database?
@ Laura: can you do the Make API tagging required to ensure the right kits are showing up on this page?

https://webmaker.org/privacy-makes
Hey I ran out of time, but take a look so far and let me know what you think!

https://webmaker.org/privacy-makes
Flags: needinfo?(laura)
@ Kate: when will the updated copy appear on live? https://webmaker.org/privacy-makes

@ Laura: looking good! see: Bug 962619 - Do copy review on Privacy and Security teaching kit
Flags: needinfo?(kate)
Next steps on the content side:

1) Pick the best ones. Decide which of these we want to keep on the page. Right now there's 15. Do a gut check on which of these are good enough to promote widely, and which are not.

2) Tweak titles and descriptions in the Make API.
** Titles. Tweak copy to make sure the titles are crystal clear. e.g., "Merkel privacy remix" needs a clearer title to get across what it is and why.
** Summary descriptions. For example, the summary description on the Privacy and Security Kit is way too long right now, which is breaking the design.

3) Make sure the order is right. In terms of what's listed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Make sure it's logical for users and tells a story.

LAURA: what are your timelines like? Can you take next pass on these three things Thurs am your time, and then I'll do 2nd pass Thurs am my time?

* RE: CONTENT: From Brett on IRC:

laurahilliger and kat started a cool NSA popcorn maker thing
https://keyboardkat.makes.org/popcorn/1err "party at the NSA"

we should finish that and put it in there its cool

happy for you to put in Party at the NSA remix. I had created it to try to get in contact with them re: Popcorn, but it wasn't used in end. So go for it :) And let me know if there are other ways I can help at this stage, too.
OK. I chose 12 makes. I alternated between a teaching resource and a make/remix project. I changed images, added descriptions and edited titles. I filed this bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=963060 (for Kat and my sanity ;)

Back to you for review and close Matt!

Some of the starter makes on the page need more context and could be helped by the tutorial functionality. Without the tutorials, I would say that these should be ommited. eg:

-"Mobile Security" https://thimble.webmaker.org/project/30129/remix
-"Give Merkel Context"
-"Party at the NSA"

To make a tutorial, you need to add tutorial-<thimblepage> to the tags on publish. Here's an example
https://thimble.webmaker.org/project/22957/remix

-I think these just need a few bits of instruction of what we want the user to do. They don't need to be complicated - just simple guideposts.

Something I continued to trip on with these was that the title links to the finished make, rather than the editor. Something we'll have to consider.
+1 to what Brett said re: the difficulty of Starter/Beginner Makes not going straight to "remix"/edit window. I've asked for this for a while with no result (#sadface). See bug here, unresolved: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=938178

And I don't know the most recent way to insert tutorials, but will ask Pomax about this in office tomorrow. Once I get a refresh on it I can add tutorial to my Party at the NSA make for ya.
* Just waiting on the copy to be updated so I can sign off and close this ticket
* When is that going to happen?
* Should have been more specific: by copy update I mean the one from Kate in comments 37 & 38
(In reply to Brett Gaylor [:brett] from comment #39)
Mobile Security uses code comments for the tutorial layer, and I just edited a little and made a tutorial (https://laura.makes.org/thimble/how-to-make-a-comic-with-thimble) before realizing that there's no place in the makeapi to assign tutorials to makes. I filed this: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=964176

+Karen to edit the Merkel piece: @Karen - Can you edit the info popup to the beginning of this make:
https://karenlouisesmith.makes.org/popcorn/1j1j

to say "Germans care about privacy - remix this video and add your thoughts on privacy and trust." or something similar. Can you also extend the video so Angela doesn't get cut off at the end?

@Kat - to my knowledge, there is no Popcorn tutorial - but maybe you just want to add a popup similar to the one above? "Share your thoughts on privacy and eavesdropping...."
I've done a remix here: https://karenlouisesmith.makes.org/popcorn/1ps0

Laura, let me know if this covers off what you are looking for
Flags: needinfo?(laura)
* Looks like the copy on the live page still hasn't been updated.

* Did the commit in comment 38 get pushed to production? I'm not seeing it

looks great Karen! I edited the description a little, but otherwise THANK YOU!!!

* BRETT: I'm not sure we've properly addressed your to do's in comment 39. Can you advise?

Yeah I feel the same, that the make-based ones aren't clear. I think Laura you ran into some trouble in bug #964176, but you can indeed add tutorials to other people's makes. I think we should remove these makes until we have tutorials for them.
Flags: needinfo?(brett)
(In reply to Brett Gaylor [:brett] from comment #49)
Merkel is good to go, I just added the tutorial for mobile: https://rp11715p.makes.org/thimble/mobile-security

@Kat - can you edit Party in the NSA this morning? It just needs an intro and an invitation.

1. Intro: What song makes you think about your digital life?
2. Invitation: Remix and tell us how you feel about the NSA scandal and data privacy through someone else's lyrics.
Something like this:
https://laura.makes.org/popcorn/1ptx

Also - maybe extend the ending?
Flags: needinfo?(kat)
Hey Laura,

When I go to your make above https://popcorn.webmaker.org/editor/80133/remix I don't see any tutorial - I believe this is a known problem, but it's also a big one if they aren't showing up!

In any case, will ask Pomax or someone how to do them (don't know the most recent process) and will add/elongate now.
Flags: needinfo?(kat)
Yo! NSA gif-remix make now finished at https://keyboardkat.makes.org/popcorn/1err ; I made it into a Starter Make also. I changed/added the following:

* A new personalised tutorial, using Max Capacity's format but remixing it for Data Privacy Day;
* New title/ description so it can be a more general Starter Make;
* Made it 1:00 long with many more GIFs instead of 30 seconds, and added pop-ups to the EFF, Mozilla, etc around privacy

w00t. Privacy page looks great now.
* @ Laura: can we close this out now?
* Nice job everyone...
