When Reading List is disabled, any items added prior to ones Reading List will not open in Reader Mode by default. A tap of the reader-mode icon is required; thus an extra click.

The items that have been added to ones 'Reading List' should open in Reader Mode by default.

This is by design so that all items in the search results behave the same way. Reading List items displayed in the search results offer an long-tap option to 'Open in Reader'.
