Sorry if this is a dup. See also bug 96592, which is related.
When you open a new window (menubar or cmd-N), the url-bar automatically gets
the focus, so that you can type a new url immediately. Fine. I could have used
'open location' (cmd-shift-L), but that never uses the autocomplete. I also use
the spacebar to scroll downwards (my iBook doesn't have a real page-up/down
key). But because the entire urlbar is highlighted, pressing the spacebar will
replace the url with a space, and the page doesn't scroll.
This also happens when I gave the focus to the url-bar with cmd-L. And when you
don't have the entire url-bar selected, but an insertion-point at the right. Ok,
the last one is understandable, you're trying to add a space to the right of the
url.
When the url-bar recognizes escape, tab, etc ... I think it might ignore a
spacebar (and scroll the page instead) when the entire url-bar is highlighted,
and when it isn't empty.
Ok, I can understand why this is happening, but it's very annoying. I know that
I have to make sure that the focus is in the page, and not on the url-bar. But
this seems to fail for me quite often, as in bug 96592.
Ok, just idea of having space be interpreted as anything other than space, while
in the URL bar, is very silly.
But anyways, just testing in 4.x and see that Ctrl-N opens a new window and puts
focus on the page. While mozilla puts focus on the URL bar.
So which would you prefer? I am thinking the URL bar makes more sense.
Anyways this will get a little nicer if <a
href="http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=96592">96592</a> is fixed.
So either we chnage the default focus of a new windows (just to please you :)hehe
or we make it a pref.
Ok I'm in a silly mood, setting future :)

Don't forget that on a Mac, you can't change the focus to another part of the
window with the keyboard (tab or other). You have to use the mouse or trackpad.
This has nothing to do with a personal preference, Netscape 4.* worked like
that. As does Internet Exploder, iCab, Opera, .... Even Mozilla isn't consistent
(see bug 96592).
