User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:27.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/27.0 (Beta/Release) Build ID: 20140203105410 Steps to reproduce: Had just upgraded Thunderbird in Fedora to the 24.3.0 version. The very first thing one notices is that the status bar no longer shows the download progress when one selects to get mail. See attached screenshot of the status bar which never changes when downloading mail. Actual results: No status bar info. Expected results: Should do what it has always done, which is to show the progress when accessing multiple mail servers and downloading mail. It should display the name of the server, the name of the e-mail account and the number of total messages and the progress count of the messages downloaded.
It is interesting to note that Thunderbird did not respond well to add-ons during its upgrade. Here's how I know: It turns out that I disabled three add-ons at random and then restarted. The status bar changed back to showing the mail download progress from each server, instead of just showing the mailbox quantities. However, re-enabling the same add-ons did not change it back. The status bar now shows the progress of downloads all the time. Please note that disabling one to three addons (because I did three at a time), and then re-enabling them, solved the problem. This appears to be clearly a Thunderbird problem.

THere are several open status bar and progress bar bugs, so I think anything else that remains is likely a duplicate of a bug in one of these lists: - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?f1=short_desc&list_id=9399936&short_desc=status%20bar&bug_severity=blocker&bug_severity=critical&bug_severity=major&bug_severity=normal&bug_severity=minor&o1=nowordssubstr&resolution=---&query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&v1=title&product=MailNews%20Core&product=Thunderbird - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?query_format=advanced&short_desc_type=allwordssubstr&resolution=---&type0-0-0=nowords&value0-0-0=count%20counts&product=MailNews%20Core&product=Thunderbird&short_desc=progress%20bar&list_id=9399937

Too bad they didn't pop up when I did my search. Maybe that doesn't work well, either? But getting back to the issue; no, I doubt it is the addons. They actually were already working fine. It is unlikely that they had anything to do with the Thunderbird upgrade. However, if you now something I don't, please let us know.

What addons were you working with? And which do you still have installed? Please test steps that reproduce this issue for you now, with Thunderbird started in safe mode.

Found out further info. If I start the program, then go to Help>Restart with add-ons disabled..., confirm to do so, and then wait for the program to close and the safe mode confirmatin window to open up, I can choose Quit from there and then just open the program normally. This makes the status bar back to normal. System reboot makes no diffence. It is more like some sort of a toggle that is active. Start TB, no status info except for mailbox totals shifted to left. Use restart without add-ons, and then quit the process, then start normally, and then status info for mail download is back in place on the right side. The key to know if it will work or not, is to see if the mailbox counters are in place at the left end of the status bar. If they are, it won't display progress. If they aren't, it will. See attachments.

I turned off the Add On " Test Pilot for Thunderbird 1.3.9" and the status bar shifted to the right, but the progress bar during download is outside of its box used for it. Its shifted to the left and scrolls into the box area, then repeats.
You can leave Test pilot disabled, it is a no longer used addon. If only the bad progress bar display is remaining here then it may be bug 859276. There are screenshots in that bug so tell us if that is what you see.
I uninstalled Test Pilot. I exited out of TB and then started it again. It looked good. I did it again, and it still looked good. However, the next time the status bar was completely blank and getting messages showed no progress on the bar. I believe the other bug had to do with the Windows environment. However, I do think that the environmental hooks are wrong in the code, else why would it have so many problems with display issues? I am now back to original procedure to get the status bar back to normal.
Depends on: 859276
I was able to confirm another interesting point. It turns out that when I use the procedure of start TB, Help>Restart with Add-ons Disabled, confirm on popup, Quit on next popup, and then start TB again, I can choose not to start again and shutdownn or restart my computer and the next time I start TB it will be correct. This proves that the "toggle" process is persistant no matter what happens next. TB is always in one state or the other. I would assume that this is significant. What do you think?
Flags: needinfo?
This is almost certainly a bug with AdBlock Plus. Uninstalling it should resolve the issue.

That got it! Wow! That is great. I probably don't even need it in TB. Thank you very much.
