The Mark button currently toggles the read/unread state of the current article,
a function that most users will rarely perform. I would think that it would make
more sense if this button were to mark all read, and perhaps even jumped to the
next newsgroup with unread articles.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Select article
2.Click Mark
3.

Actual Results: Article marked unread

Expected Results: Mark all read.
I agree that most users currently use Mark All Read rather than flipping a
single message's read/unread status.

Jglick, is this an OK change?

I would suggestion a discussion in the mail/news newsgroup about this one if
you want to pursue it.

My thought is that marking *all* messages as read is a pretty drastic action,
one which is currently not reversable, and hence not a good idea to have it as
the default action of a toolbar button.

Mark all read is easily available using the button menu and well as the
accelerator Ctrl+Shift+C and the Message:Mark menu.
Ctrl+Shift+C is (still) useless, since it interferes with ICQ and brings up the
mail window for that program. There's a bug logged about that, but no progress
being done on coming up with a better, more easy-to-use, shortcut.
It would be nice if you could highlight multiple e-mails, right-click, and
instantly select "mark as read" to a large group of selected e-mail. (I used to
do this in Outlook often on mailing lists that I wanted to ignore periodically.)
Mark ALL as Read, should also be posibble, after selecting newsgroup. But right
now you have to choose a newsgroup, then choose any message in that group (this
makes Mark button active), and then press mark button. In my opinion Mark button
should be active right after selecting newsgroup.

OS > All?
Being a casual user, accidentally marking all messages as read doesn't seem like
the end of the world. Are there people so intensely dependent on newsgroup posts?

In SeaMonkey 2.0, the mark button has a drop marker and one of the menu items is "Mark all read".
