Tested on Windows 7 64bit
FF Version 30.0a1 (2014-02-17)
I have not been able to reproduce this.
Does the bug happen when running in Safe Mode
Hi - Not tested with Safe Mode. Its intermittent since FF24. It tends to be after one has used FF for some time and then has restarted it.
I have my passwords with a master password and sync set up, and it may be related to them?
The issue repeated itself and I was able to open a new window and the bookmarks appeared. I ran the extension mentioned in the article
(http://kb.mozillazine.org/Bookmarks_history_and_toolbar_buttons_not_working_-_Firefox)
and it found no issues.
I have a master password set together with Firefox Sync and wonder as I was late in entering the master password, this caused Sync maybe to lock the places db?
Do not think safe mode will be relevant as the issue is intermittent
Nigel, have you AVAST installed? If so,
the problem is probably the same as

Have now the same problem after updating to 29.0.1 yesterday on Win XP SP3.
Solution is disable / enable the tool bar, but after restartting Firefox, the tool bar is empty.

I think we have enough confirmations to consider this confirmed.

As a first step, please ensure you are using the latest version of Avast, I don't know if there may be any fix on their side.

I'm not using Avast - I' running AntiVir. Have also deinstalled Antivir and have changed to Microsoft Security Essentials. Problem with FF not solved.

Still occurs with latest version of Firefox and can occur with Kaspersky Endpoint 8. As it occurs with both - logically its a Firefox issue. My guess is that there is a race condition occurring for resources and Firefox probably gives up waiting for the resource.
