Hi reporter,
unfortunately this report is not very useful because it does not describe the problem well. If you have time and can still reproduce the problem, please read https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug and add a more useful description to this report.

Install firefox 27.0.1 on windows XP sp3.
Attempt to open a file (file->open). Nothing happens.
Not clear on what you mean by not enough info. Those are the steps to duplicate this issue. Safe mode seems to have no impact, nor does reset.
If you could be more specific as to what you're looking for I'd be happy to provide it. Works fine with 25.0.1 and 26.

I have the same problem. I can't , save, or download a file with firefox 27.0.1 on windows XP SP3.
I've observed that Firefox 27 doesn't seem to have access to the file system:
- If I select "Save Page As" or "Open a file" from the menu, nothing happens
- If I go into options and specify "Download| Save files to" and click on "Browse", nothing happens.
- If I click on a file link (e.g. pdf) and I select "Save File", nothing happens
- If I try "Export bookmarks to HTML", nothing happens
When I try to open up an attachment on my email, the save box does open up asking if I want to Open with or Save File. When I pick Open with, it works. However, when I try to Save File, it doesn't work. Similarly, when I try to save an image by right clicking and pressing Save Image As, nothing happens. When I try to download a file by right clicking and pressing Save Link As, nothing happens either. Downloadhelper doesn't works.
Firefox 26 works perfectly. Firefox 27.0.1 works if Windows is in Safe mode.
Some users of firefox 27.0.1 on windows XP3 have this problem:

hello, would you be able to run the mozregression tool to find out when in the cycle between firefox 26 and 27 the error occurred the first time? please see http://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/ for details.
when the issue first occurred in 27 then you can run the mozregression tool with the following arguments --good=2013-08-05 --bad=2013-09-16
then the tool will automatically download and execute nightly builds from this time span - test if the error is present there and type either "good" or "bad" into the mozregression tool until it comes up with a last good and first bad build - this would be the important information that might be needed to
understand what's causing the problem.

I run the mozregression tool and you can see 2 pictures of this argument: --good=2013-08-05 --bad=2013-09-16 --bits=32

http://img4.hostingpics.net/pics/651434902.jpg
I don't know if I made mistakes.

paul, i am sorry. i think i gave you the wrong timespan, firefox 27 should actually be:
--good=2013-09-16 --bad=2013-10-29
Ok no problem. I run the mozregression tool with the right timespan: --good=2013-09-16 --bad=2013-10-29
You can see the results here:

ok, sorry that still doesn't appear right (you should get to a bad instance once) - maybe the change didn't land during the regular 27 nightly cycle but was uplifted later.
can you please try with just --good=2013-10-28

thanks! the regression range would be https://hg.mozilla.org/integration/mozilla-inbound/pushloghtml?fromchange=f0d6d67fbc1e&tochange=5fc52820456d which is strange because for me as a layman only bug 932100 seems to be remotely plausible to have caused this, but was backed out of firefox 27 in the end...
can you try to replicate the problem when you restart windows in safemode once (with networking enabled)? http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx

There are two different issues going on here, one about opening a file and one about saving a file. Can the original poster please confirm exactly what is happening, what file type he is trying to open and where this is stored on his hard drive? Thanks!

Unfortunately I can't replicate the problem when I restart windows in safe mode with networking enabled.

Do you use Avast?
potential incompatibility with Avast, uninstall to check ...
2 cases (only) possible with Avast in common:

So this has been marked as solved ? Also with just uninstalling Avast, i don't really think that this could be the best solution/answer for this issue since i installed the previous version of Firefox v26 and this known issue doesn't occur.

It's been marked as solved because this is a bug in Avast, not in Firefox. You can contact them and look for a resolution, but there is nothing we can do on our end to fix this issue.

May i ask, why it worked on Firefox previous version? (Version: 26 Branch)

Something in avast isn't compatible with Firefox 27, they need to fix their software

Still strange, however i had played around with both FFv26 and FFv27.0.1 and also the AV Avast Free version. After trying and reinstalling couple of times i found out that Firefox needed the add-on from Avast to gain access and to handle while having Avast Free Antivirus installed on the current workstation.
System:
Windows XP Pro SP3
Avast Free Antivirus Edition; Program version 2014.9.0.2013
Firefox version 27 branch; 27.0.1
Solution > Avast add-on > http://goo.gl/bRHCkV
1. Total uninstall Avast + Avast AD Blocker(came with old version of AVAST).
2. Then re-installed the latest version of Avast Free Antivirus.
3. After reboot, open Firefox browser and you will be asked to install
"avast! Online Security 9.0.2013.75" add-on, install it and all these issues are gone.
4. Tested "Upload", "Save as...", "Print (CTRL+P)" and "Browse to open file" all are working now.
Thanks.

And concerned mainly Avast
Comment 25•11 years ago

Well, I just wonder if it's really only Avast concerned...
I have a W7 on another laptop and Avast and no any problems
and yes, I've tried Safe Mode and new profile.

Here is the same case, I think,: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2801993&p=13368671&sid=a8c31102325770f60e1152b49afa6474#p13368671
Anyone know if here on Bugzilla is any other, separate bug similar to my problem?

Well, I just was disabling one extension by one, and I found that PhotoMe 2.0 was that trouble making extension. ;) I can't register on its forum. Anyone can confirm it?
Comment 28•11 years ago

Well, after a while i upgraded FF to v28.0 and also back to v27.0.1 it appears again and can't be solved with the extension add on from Avast.
PS: I didn't have PhotoMe2.0 installed.
