From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; WinNT4.0; en-US; rv:0.9.3) Gecko/20010801 BuildID: 2001080110 If I re-enter some newsgroup after long time I can see a lot of old articles. While attempting to access this articles I get: -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Error! newsgroup server responded:Bad article number Perhaps the article has expired <9asiog$218o$1@news.kis.ru> (532) Click here to remove all expired articles -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- "Click here to remove all expired articles" referes to URL like news://3APA3A@news/nnov.news?list-ids Click to this URL opens new window. Nothing happens. I still see expired articles. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Subscribe to any newsgroup (online mode), read some articles 2. Visit same newgroup after few weeks (then articles will expire) Actual Results: You'll see expired articles Expected Results: You will not see expired articles or you are able to remove expired articles from newsgroup Probably this problem closely relates to Bug ID 72820. But the problem lies in fact expired messages not actually deleted even if i close Mozilla and open it again.
Summary: Expired artic;es cann't be removed → Expired articles cann't be removed

Wait a minute, not so fast (sorry for verifying so quick...) 3APA3A says: Probably this problem closely relates to Bug ID 72820. But the problem lies in fact expired messages not actually deleted even if i close Mozilla and open it again. so, seems like a different problem to me. re-opening.

Confirming. I think the bug here is that expired articles in newsgroups dont get deleted even after Mozilla knows that they are expired. I'll play around in the newsgroups soon and try to see what NS4.x did and why old messages build up in the newsgroups. (shouldn't there be some way to delete unread nonexisting message headers after a certain amount of time?)

What I don't understand is why when the newsgroup is selected that Mozilla doesn't automatically display headers of only messages actually available from the server. I realize the the selection causes the previous set of retrieved headers to be redisplayed, but since it also looks for new ones to add to the display, it should also be looking for expireds to remove. IOW, it shouldn't need to be told to remove the expireds. It should be done automatically. It the bodies aren't available, there is no apparent purpose served by displaying those headers. 4.x behaves the same in this regard, except that clicking on the link actually removes the expired headers, and focus isn't switched to a browser window when it is clicked.

Can this really be there's NO WAY to delete headers, expired or not?! I gave up using Mozilla's News twice before because I couldn't find it, but always figured it was there somewhere... this is like not having a 'delete' command in Mail. How can this be?! Major perf issue. Major disk space issue. Major usability issue. Every news agent I've ever used has done this BY DEFAULT on exit. AND had an easy way to do it while it was running. How could it possibly not exsist in Mozilla?

Stephen, can you test this and dup/invalid it if it works. It works fine for me (clicking on the link).
wfm with build 2002-02-18-03, but then I never could reproduce his problem (but I believe/d him).
marking wfm with build 2002-02-18-03. 3APA3A, if you still see this with a current nightly, please re-open with the build ID and additional comments.
really marking wfm.

Also not fixed in 2002022616 for OS/2.
Mike Kaply - can you confirm whether this is broken on OS/2 or not? I don't have access to a box, thanks.
