issues with change the newsrc from the UI.
we current allow the user to change the newsrc file from the account manager UI.
if it doesn't exist, we'll probably do the right thing: write out to that
location.
but if we point to an existing newsrc file, should we suck it in and update our
unread values / subscribed groups? (yikes, that's a lot of work.) I'm
guessing we currently just stomp over the existing file.
at best, we'll do nothing until the next time the user starts up. I'd have to
investigate.
the only time I've edited that pref is when the app is shutdown, and I want to
point to an existing newsrc file, like ~/.newsrc-news.mozilla.org

Seriously, how valuable is the option to be able to change the newsrc file from
GUI really? :P

From the DUP bug, bug 166472:
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.1)
Gecko/20020826
If the newsrc file path has been changed, then any newsgroups you subscribe to
will be "forgotten." Mozilla subscribes to newsgroups fine and generates the
appropriate .msf and hostinfo.dat files in the specifiec newsrc path. However,
when mozilla is completly closed and reopened, the subscribed newsgroups are
missing.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add a newsgroup account.
2. Change the newsrc file path (in the Newsgroups Server Settings)
3. Subscribe to a newsgroup and download its files.
4. Completely close Mozilla.
5. Reopen Mozilla mail & newsgroups.
Actual Results:
The newsgroup account appears, but the subscribed newsgroups are missing.
Expected Results:
The subscribed newsgroups and messages should appear. (This is what happens if
the newsrc file path is not modified.)
See related bugs 123227 and more importantly, bug 156841.

Whiteboard: [good first bug]
My setup was TB's NEWSRC files in Dropbox being shared with my iPad Newsreader App "NewsTap". The iPad was for traveling and NewsTap was not run at the same time as TB.
Last week I clean installed W10 Pro, installed TB, and then could not change the NEWSRC location to Dropbox using the TB GUI.
-
- Following is my work around:
- Shut down both Thunderbird.
- Exit Dropbox on the PC.
- Move all Dropbox folder NEWSRC files to the PC desktop. (Named news.account name.rc)
- Start Thunderbird.
- Change the TB NEWSRC file location for each newsgroup account to Dropbox. WinExplorer will show NEWSRC now in Dropbox.
- Shut down Thunderbird.
- Copy all NEWSRC files from the desktop back into Dropbox as REPLACEMENT(s).
- Start Dropbox.
- Delete NEWSRC files from desktop when satisfied.
I am not sure if the GUI failure is a TB or Windows problem.
