What should we be looking at when verifying this? What exactly wasn't working before?

This was just a change of domain name for the directory. You can test by activating a provider (e.g. pocket) from https://activations.cdn.mozilla.net

I've verified this using 29 RC (Build ID: 20140421221237), latest 30 Aurora (Build ID: 20140424004002), and latest 31 Nightly (Build ID: 20140424030204). All providers can be activated when accessing https://activations.cdn.mozilla.net.
