Compositor + Layers uses a lot of shmem at ShmemTextureData when multiple processes are used like e10s on Linux. On Linux,  Bug 1549965, Bug 1432531 and Bug 1549965 might increase shmem usage.

If we want to decrease shmem usage at gfx, WebRender could be a choice.
