Perhaps it's easy to invert the text color or maybe we can draw our own text with themes? Another option would be to know how wide it is and add a light glow behind the text.

I'd prefer drawing our own text. Then I wouldn't need to fix bug 486536 (which I'm still assigned to, oops...) :)
