No warning or error dialog is displayed if a restricted user attempts to modify
the default email setting in pref panel. What occurs is that a user can select
or deselect the default email pref, but when exiting the setting returns to what
was set previously without any warning to tell the user that he/she does not
have write access.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Setup up a restricted user in nt4, 2000, ME, XP, etc...
2. after logging in, launch mozilla.
3. in pref panel, attempt to select/deselect the default email setting, save and
exit the pref panel.

ACTUAL:
No dialog box displays warning the user of the restricted rights to the system.

Is it common not to have write access for a user on such systems?
In corporate environments, yes. Currently no warning is acceptable. Any
warning that does appear must be clear about how to proceed and should not be a
cryptic system level warning (as appears in 4.x).
that would be correct, write access to certain directories is part of the
restrictions on these OS's, which would prevent a user from installing anything
that copies files to the windows directory.

4.x with Simple MAPI has the same restrictions on these OS's, but 4.x displays
an error dialog.

The dialog box mentioned in bug 104256, is being displayed in the case where the
user has restricted access. But the same dialog is displayed in serveral other
cases and is being release noted.
Trix can you verify that the dialog is being brought up ig the user has
restricted access
This bug has been fixed by bug 95122. Right now the user will see a dialog box

"Netscape 6 Mail could not be set as the default mail application because a
registry key could not be updated. Verify with your system administrator that
you have write access to your system registry, and then try again."

However, our team feels that we need a better dialog to tell people what to do.
Suggested wording are as follows:

"Netscape 6 Mail could not be set as the default mail application. Verify with
your system administrator that you have write access to your (1) system
registry,(2)registry key. And ensure that your MAPI dll is not in use. Then try
again."

We'll finalize the proposed dialog in the 2nd stage of sMAPI.
