Galeon has a small close icon in each tab. I would like to see
that in mozilla.
If I remember well, Galeon propose multiple modes in its
preferences:

(1) no close icon at all
(2) only the close icon in the tab with focus is enabled.
(3) all close icons are enabled at any times.

Mode 2 is probably not so interesting because the tabs
you want to close are often the ones you are not currently
reading. So mode 3 was my initial choice but I decided
to use mode 2 after I killed by accident a few tabs
while trying to change the focus. From my point of view,
mode 3 with a double click to close the tab would be
perfect.

a 4th option is the way lotus notes does it, which it that when you mouse over a
tab button, a close button appears. I find this pretty nice, but I'm not sure
if it is consistant with the rest of the mozilla UI.
I would like to see something like this, as I think right-clicking and then
clicking again to close a tab is a bit inconvenient.

I think a single close button on the upper-right is the right thing to user-test
first, since users are accustomed to it being there, and it doesn't take up
space in each tab.
trudelle: you know that we used to have one and hyatt removed it, right? fwiw
the lotus suggestion sounds neat, but i suspect that i couldn't sell it to
modern or classic theme owners.
Summary: Close button on tabs → Close button for tabs
yes, I know. We need it back, or some similar one-click close affordance.
in the meantime, you can middle click on an open tab to close it.
No, I can't, nor can most other people.
I also vote for the return of the little X to close the current tab.

Many people don't have middle buttons, and they don't think to use them anyways.

We used to have the x. Why don't we anymore?

I like all the changes to the tabbed interface lately, just bring back the x!
Done.
