I think we would rely on our standard blocklisting service for this. AFAIK we've never had an e10s specific issue with a particular driver.

In this bug we have a couple reports, one on linux, one on windows. One apparently got fixed by a driver update. So this bug bug isn't actionable at this point. This could also be related to bug 1049551. I've seen this myself a couple times, but I know it's not driver specific.

Let's plus this bug for now and keep it around until we see more reports.

heeee ! some news :

 i have 2 graphics processors on my computer :
- Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M

under windows 8.1, you can choose one of them to run nightly. The graphic processor by default is intel.

with e10s enabled :
- when i launch nightly with intel hd graphics 4600 all is ok
- when i choose NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M, i get blank screen on all tabs (except items from tools and help menu)

This behavior is reproducible.
This sounds relevant to the interests of the e10s graphics crew.
Ring any bells dparks? This sounds similar to something you were working on a while back.

I don't think this is related to anything I've been looking at.  It's not the infinite-loop hang (Bug 1066381) or the black frame seen when switching tabs (Bug 1049551) so its new to me.  (There was also a black-video-but-with-audio issue you may be thinking of.)  Has bugdjilla's issue been fixed by a driver update (comment 5) or is it still active (comment 10)?

the issue has not been fixed by driver update. 
I thought it was the update nvidia driver that stop error, in commment 5.
In fact, I did turn on the nightly intel graphics processor without knowing, and all run with him.
So, issue is still active, see comment 10.
i test again with all extensions/plugins disabled, issue  active.
Hello everyone,

I can reproduce this issue with my laptop (Aurora 35 ; Intel graphics ; Ubuntu 12.04). My graphic card says "Tungsten Graphics, Inc -- Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ivybridge Mobile". If it helps, I can provide more info !

One thing to notice : dev tools are working (and the inspect tab... meaning there is a DOM).
black screen on all tabs (except items from tools and help menu). Before build 20150621 or 20150624 - was ok. Black only after FF update.

I am not 100% sure this is the same bug but I see the same behavior using the Intel HD 520 GPU and Firefox 45.0b5. It only turns to black or white occasionally and minimizing it seems to fix it. Some of the time bookmark bar menus/folders are also corrupted on opening.
the e10s tabs are rendered black, while the menus, the preferences and plugin tabs and the toolbars are rendered normally. The problem do not appear on not e10s tabs. Problem not present before the update before the one of yesterday. I'm currently running Developer Edition 46.0a2 on an Intel Intergated Chipset on Slackware-current x86_64, also i use XOrg server v.1.18 and Plasma 5. On Windows 10 x86_64, there's no problem. Can you confirm that rolling back a last known good version works? If so what as the build ID?

I've seen this now a few times in the past week running Firefox Nightly 64-bit on Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview build 14352, though it only comes after much usage of the browser. Minimizing the browser doesn't fix it, I have to restart it.

I had been experiencing this lately, with e10s enabled.

Certain websites would "trigger" the black screen for all tabs, until I closed and reopened Firefox.

With the latest AMD 16.6.2 driver, it's no longer doing this (hopefully).

To confirm, I went back to AMD 16.6.1 and it returned. Now I'm back on AMD 16.6.2 driver and it's all good again.
I've come across this with:
Firefox 48.0 as provided by Linux Mint 17.1 (based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS), 64-bit (Linux 3.13.0-37-generic x86-64)
Asus EeePC netbook with the Intel Atom N450 CPU (with built-in Intel graphics)
2GB RAM
1024x600 built-in screen + a bigger external monitor via the VGA connection


Issue:
Firefox starts with white page (while showing correct URL in the URL box). That happens on the built-in screen. When the window is dragged over to the external monitor and maximized, the white page turns to completely black (again, while showing correct URL in the URL box). Calling different URLs doesn't make the issue go away.

Of the attached profiles, one works while the other shows the issue. They are equal, as far as consciously made modifications are concerned. To make the non-working profile "work", one needs to change "extensions.e10sBlockedByAddons" to "false".

The issue is reproducible at will rotating the profiles.


Background (profile creation):
- I had a rarely used, cleaned-up of history data on each closing, profile
- After opening the profile for the first time with the current Firefox version (the add-on compatibility check window appeared on start), it worked at first (pages were displayed correctly)
- After some actions (closing and re-opening Firefox among them, I guess) the issue appeard
- I went to "Troubleshooting Information" and hit "Refresh Firefox..." (some things were shown by Firefox to be successfully taken over from previous profile)
- Applied my own mild security modifications (disabling most plugins, Loop, WebGL, etc.)
==> Here is the attached non-working profile (issue still appears)

- I manually emptied the profile directory (the directory itself was kept, but all files in it removed), so that it was automatically re-populated on next Firefox start
- Applied the same modifications as before. Thereby, re-started Firefox after each couple of about:config modifications, to see if the issue appears (it never did).

I learned from the above that doing a "Refresh Firefox..." doesn't seem to do such a thorough cleaning as a manual profile directory purge, which eliminated the issue for me. (Unless it coincided with something else.)

Today I got FF 50.0 via official updates for ubuntu 16.04. After update, I have the same problem as described in this issue.

For ubuntu, I openend a bug report at https://bugs.launchpad.net/firefox/+bug/1643200 together with additional information and screen shot.
Workaround:

In my case this solved it: Enable FF plugin "ubuntu modifications".

After enabling the plugin, all tabs are shown correctly again.
After upgrading from FF 51.0.0 to 51.0.1 I get white pages again.

My workaround (enable FF plugin "ubuntu modifications") does not fix this any more. I even tried to disable and enable the plugin, with restarts in between.

My first guess would be that issue broke something (that patch made it into 51.0.1).

In respect to my problem, I have solved it by patching ubuntu's apparmor profile for firefox.

See the latest patch at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1659988 for the changes I made.

With the changes to the profile applied, content is rendered correctly again in tabs (FF 51.0.1).
I can stop this behavior (all white pages) by changing the profile.ini line StartWithLastProfile to 0. Which is to say, make the line read StartWithLastProfile=0

Works for me, YMMV!

Sorry, scratch my comment 32, the line that has to be changed in profiles.ini is IsRelative! That is, make the line read IsRelative=0
On the off chance that anyone does ever look at this bug again, it's getting stuck in function RotatedContentBuffer::BeginPaint(PaintedLayer*, uint32_t) in file RotatedBuffer.cpp, in particular, it loops forever to the if statement beginning on line 701:

if (Factory::ReasonableSurfaceSize(IntSize(destBufferRect.width, destBufferRect.height)

On my system, this bug does not occur if the browser is running as a root owned process, but always does happen when running as an unprivileged user owned process. I suspect the browser is using something in /dev that the kernel doesn't want unprivileged users to use (I've seen other bug reports mentioning something in /dev/shm, but on my system that directory is empty).
I encounter the issue since Firefox 53 (and also in FF Developer Edition 54)

I do have dual GPU's, the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M. Also, I'm using e10s since FF53, before they were disabled by incompatible extensions. I'm on recent video drivers: NVIDIA 381.65 and Intel 10.18.15.4279.
I have never encountered the issue on startup (yet) though, like mentioned in bug 1066226. Also my tabs always turn black, never white.

Since FF doesn't crash, there's also no crash report attached. It happened while watching videos, but also while I'm just surfing or using WhatsApp Web. For it to fix, I have to restart Firefox.

I also have refreshed Firefox, it didn't fix the problem.

The first tab to turn bad doesn't have to completely turn black. Somethimes I get one colored bar, and a lot of white space. Every other tab after that will turn black. Since the UI doesn't freeze, you can just switch tabs. The first tab to crash keeps like this. 
Other times, the first tab turns black directly, just like all the tabs after that one.
