when using the classic theme with different system background colors, a white square appears around the lizard's head with the icon in the location bar. this is probably undesirable. the default page icon in teh location bar seems to have the correct transparency. this is with build 200111503 on winnt
Transparency is no solution either. If you go that route then if someone picks a theme that is black, the icon lines will blur into the rest of the UI and you'll just see a red dot, with no definition. I suggest marking this WONTFIX.
That's just not true. Mozilla.org: settling for less since 1857. Here's one that has transparency & doesn't disappear.
Where is Giovanni's stuff these days? Used to be http://www.crosswinds.net/~ggc/, I think. Anyhow, those were the best icons, by far. I always thought they should be the official ones. From The ol' bug 43647... Anyhow, this isn't my work. I've just scaled Giovanni's icon. I'll see if I can find a valid address for him & ask if we can use it.

cc -> gcavallanti@gmx.it Giovanni, are you still at this address? I'd love to see your icon used as the "favicon" mozilla.org.
By the way, this isn't only visible using Classic & unusual system colours You will always see it in modern (if your eyes are sharp enough). Whatever your system colours are. Because the URLbar doesn't have a plain white background.
So you preferred to open a new bug instead of reopening bug 109144. Mauybe this is the better way to do. So I rather repeat my posting here: Pure transparency will result in bad contrast on different backgrounds. Have a look at <http://www.subotnik.net/tmp/icons/mozilla.html>! It places thre icons on different background colours (this is important at least for skinnability). The first icon ist todays <http://mozilla.org/images/mozilla-16.png> with white background. The second is attachement 57678. The third has a transparent background but I added a half-transparent shining around the image. Remember: The cool stuff about PNG is alpha transparency. Let's use it!
Depends on: 109144
Here I am :-) The old page at crosswinds.net is gone but I've just put up a new page at http://digilander.iol.it/mozillaart . There you can find three new icons as well as the old ones.
Hey - it's transparent now. When did that happen? Justin / Mitchell - I guess you can resolve it as FIXED. (But I still like GCC's icons.)
Marking FIXED per Mike's comment and own observations.
