Would it be possible to add a shortcut / modifier key to open links in a new tab? There are already CTRL+click and SHIFT+click shortcuts to open in new windows and save destination (respectively). I'm thinking of something like ALT+click to open the link in a new tab. It may get a little overloaded however. bug 105620 has a lot of discussion on key shortcuts for *closing* tabs.
Select the pref for 'Navigator' -> 'Tabbed Browsing' -> 'Open Tabs instead of Windows for ..' -> 'middle-click or ctrl-click of links in web pages'

No, that's not what I had in mind. Once you do chose that option, you need to right-click on links to open them in a new window. I'm looking for: click -> open link this window CTRL+click -> open link in new window FOO+click -> open link in new tab Rather than just changing the behaviour of CTRL+click.

Just a quick note. Alt-click is a common windowmanager shortcut. I'd suggest something more like ctrl-shift-click.
ctrl-shift-click is taken.

What about Ctrl + middle click?
bryner/aaronl, your thoughts here...?

I attached a patch that allows control-middle mouse button click on a link open the link in a new window/tab. This patch works within in the context of the current "Tabbed browsing|Open Tabs instead of windows for middle-click of links" preference. If that preference is set then middle-click on a link will open a new tab, while control-middle-click will open a new window. If that preference is not set, middle-click will open a new window, while control-middle-click will open a tab. This is not a perfect solution, since it doesn't help 1 and 2 button mouse users, but it seems reasonable since new tabs/windows are still available from the context menu. I hacked up this patch before I was aware of this bug, and decided to post it here instead of the closely related bug 110619 or bug 111678.

excuse me, but actually i have this shortcut: click --> this window or new window, depends on HTML ctrl-click --> open in new tab *always* this works fine form me since 097.
I like the idea of "Control-Middle-Click" as a shortcut for "Force open in new tab" personally (I filed a dup bug). But it looks like we may need something even more generic to accomidate users tastes and/or OS quirks (Unix -> 2/3, Windows -> 2, Mac -> 1 mouse button). Is "Control-Right" and "Control-Shift-Right" taken for anything? That can accomidate the Windows users (unless anyone wants to port XFree Middle Mouse Button emulation semantics (both buttons at once) to Windows).

What is the status of this bug? Last comment was in April.
*** Bug 228553 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I was the one that files the bug #228553 - but: I don't have a middle-click option on my trackball, so I can't use the patch (unless there's a new version that also allows ctrl-right-click). I would really like a way to use the mouse+keyboard to open a link in a new tab - and one that works for legacy-mice... So bug #228533 is not resolved - this fix doesn't work (for me).
