.com][de]: site needs to be localized to 2 .0
Hello Michael and Sebastian, As part of the new marketing campaign for 2.0 release, we are also updating this site. The site will be migrated to internal hosting, and the new look and feel will be launched on February 18th (English). As part of the internal hosting effort, the strings are stored in github (instead of the text files you were working in). You can review and make corrections directly. I hope you find it much easy to tackle this time around. There are three parts to the project once moved to internal hosting: - Web content - Video script - Navigation (like Home and dropdown menu as footer type strings) The Web content and Navigation related strings are accessible through these two places: - github: https://github.com/mozilla/masterfirefoxos-l10n/blob/master/de/LC_MESSAGES/django.po (this could be updated daily - it will be adjusted to this refresh frequency - currently it is done manually)) - pontoon: https://pontoon.mozilla.org/de/master-firefox-os/ (updated hourly) Reference Site: English reference site:https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/en/2-0/ German site (after github code push) https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/. IMPORTANT things to note and pay attention to: - You need to register in order to access to pontoon - For German, the site is localized in 1.1 version and it needs to be localized into 2.0. - Review 1.1 to make sure the migration didn't break anything - Localize content designed for 2.0. You will notice NOTES to translators for each string with version numbers (1.1, 1.3T, 1.4 and/or 2.0). Work on strings appear in 1.1 and 2.0 versions. - Localize strings that have no notes to translators (these are navigation type of strings). - tags: keep the tags in the localized strings or the layout will be messed up. The video script will be uploaded in Amara. This is the case for all the new videos and new languages/versions. However, we will have audio dubbed for German like we did before. The current design is for languages where native speakers are hard to locate in the Bay Area. Right now I am waiting for the script to be finalized. I will share the link with you as soon as it becomes available. There are other dependencies to make the site ready - Key Features and Consumer guides etc. As soon as all the pieces come together and tested and signed off, we will enable the German site. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you, Peiying
I started checking the strings for Italian, some suggestions based on what I've seen so far. The old website was a mess, so the import has been kind of a try and miss. Sometimes you'll find strings completely unrelated, sometimes the right strings, sometimes you just need to fix/add the HTML markup (Pontoon helps a lot with its warnings). Keep around the Word file you used for the old website, because you can copy and paste several of the missing strings. In Pontoon you can use Enter to save the string.
Please hold on a bit with translation, we're having some issue with tools, and I'd like to understand if we can do something better with the strings to reduce the amount of duplicated work.
Just asking, is it in any way possible that Pontoon loses translated strings, if they have not yet been checked in? Also, how many words are there to localize and what’s the deadline?
It's not possible, but I know why you are asking. :) There was a bug with our external library, which is fixed now. I'm also restoring translations, should be done in < 1 hour.
Thanks, did it happen already? Because I’m not seeing changes so far. And how long will it take for the issues to be fixed? That looks like a lot of stuff to translate and I’d like to get it done as soon as possible. Also, I don’t see any check-in button on Pontoon.
It *just* happened, please check: https://pontoon.mozilla.org/de/master-firefox-os/ Issues are also fixed, but the project is still on hold until we resolve issues with the content. Some strings are very confusing, to say the least. Pontoon syncs with the repository automatically.
Hi Michael, We found a lot of issues while building the site, unfortunately at very late stage, and some can't be fixed for 2.0 or older versions. We are raising them and they are tracked by a different bug 1131736. Thanks to Flod and Matjaz for doing their part for making improvement they have control of. Word count, this is a rough estimate for 2.0 - I just shared the docs with you: - web content: ~ 4000 - video script: ~ 700 - Navigation strings: a handful. Deadline: ideally on Feb 18th, but we will push it live when the locale/version is ready. This can be individually done. Given there are lots to be done after the strings are localized, recording and mixing, plus QA of site, but we will try to get it launched close to the desired date. Since there is no filter to isolate 2.0 strings from the rest, the dashboard status can be misleading. If there are untranslated strings, the way to find out is on live site. Not ideal! Beside the 2.0 localization, another task to complete is to check and verify the 1.1 strings and make sure the mapping is correct. I will send an email on that to all the locales currently on masterfirefox site. This older version will go live on Feb 18th. This will replace the old site completely. Please wait until Matjaz give the green light before resuming.
Hi Michael, Matjaz has done some major cleanup. The team owning the migration and building the site wants to make more changes so localizers don't have to go through painful and redundant steps to do the work. They are asking for extension of deadline in order to accomplish this. There will be improvement but it may not be frustration free process. In the meantime, you have the option of working in this word files: http://tinyurl.com/kcf3vzj. When Pontoon is ready, you can copy and paste to the environment. I would recommend you start working on the video file first, as we need the script for recording and that can be done simultaneously when you work on content later. Thank you!
(In reply to Peiying Mo [:CocoMo] from comment #8) > In the meantime, you have the option of working in this word files: > http://tinyurl.com/kcf3vzj. When Pontoon is ready, you can copy and paste to > the environment. Just to make it clear, as I marked in the previous comment - Pontoon is fix and ready for localization.
As of this moment, the Pontoon page shows 100% for the translated strings. While it surely is in need of major review, I very much hope it stays that way and if I never again have to work through that, I will be too soon. I’m also attaching my first version of the video script translation. Archaeopteryx, if time permits, please take a look. All of this is really not funny and I hope it’s over soon. A „not frustration free process“ quite accurately describes my sentiments towards working for Mozilla these days. Keep in mind that there is only so much we can do.

Hi Michael and Sebastian, We hear you!! The team is still working on resolving the issues at source so to minimize pain points on localization side, not to mention that each of the communities has to work though them. We hope to find a much more improved experience in a day or two. In the meantime, the videos are finalized and staged here. As planned, German videos will be dubbed as soon as the script is reviewed and signed off by you. http://amara.org/en/videos/V2QklyHiChu4/info/masterfirefoxoscom-intro-to-firefox-os/ http://amara.org/en/videos/9uT23JBpJeQW/info/masterfirefoxoscom-marketplace/ http://amara.org/en/videos/FTGkAw3Bm2w1/info/masterfirefoxoscom-firefox-browser/ http://amara.org/en/videos/8VOxfdJa2Sq5/info/masterfirefoxoscom-stay-connected/ http://amara.org/en/videos/I5MgUpsze78I/info/masterfirefoxoscom-camera-gallery/ http://amara.org/en/videos/v77in7YLsOv2/info/masterfirefoxoscom-music-radio/ Thank you, Peiying

I want to let you know that the dev team building the site is going to fix the current flow so you will only see version 2.0 in your repository. What you have completed will be migrated to the right place. It is expected that the process/po file update will be completed by Tuesday (with Flod verifying while US is on holiday on Monday). We hope after the change, you will have better system to work with. (Flod is your strongest advocate) That is our goal!
Comment on attachment 8562998 [details] First draft of German video translation All in all great work, Michael! Here are some corrections and suggestions: > das Handy mit eigenen Klingeltönen personalisieren undsogar Apps mit Ortsbezug missing space between "und" and "sogar" > die ihre täglichen Leben bereichern und vereinfachen that sounds weird, but that might just be me :) > Wie SMS… "Wie Nachrichten..."? > Firefox-OS-Nutzer "Firefox OS - Nutzer"? (appears twice) > mehrere Kategorien durchsuchen, von Spielen missing space after comma > was Ihre Kunden erwarten: Von Textnachrichten über E-Mail "von" since it's not a full sentence after it? > Sie können ihre Samlung nach Interpret "Sammlung" > aber sich sorgen um ihre Datenbegrenzung machen "Sorgen"

Hi Michael, thanks for your corrections. (In reply to Michael Kohler [:mkohler] from comment #14) > > die ihre täglichen Leben bereichern und vereinfachen > > that sounds weird, but that might just be me :) I agree, but when the original text says „enrich and simplify their daily lives“ there’s not much I can do. I’d be grateful for any suggestions to fix this. ;-) How about „mit denen ihre täglichen Leben bereichert und vereinfacht werden“? > "Firefox OS - Nutzer"? (appears twice) I think two hyphens are required here, see Rat der Rechtschreibung (2006): Regeln und Wörterverzeichnis, §50, <http://rechtschreibrat.ids-mannheim.de/download/regeln2006.pdf>.
I'm worried that the time in which the subtitles are shown won't be sufficient to read them for a significant group of viewers.
For German, we will have native speaker to record the text. The subtitle option will be used if we can't find local voice talent. So, do you think a German speaker will finish the sentence in the given time slot?
Thanks, I’m attaching an updated video script. Also, I thought that Pontoon was allowing for live-editing of the page. As the translation looks somewhat messy and inconsistent in some places, this would be rather helpful when reviewing the translations. Am I missing something? And by the way, the headings on <https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/> are untranslated, even though the strings are.
Comment on attachment 8564712 [details] Second draft of German video translation The last abstract also still contains the English text.
Attachment #8564712 - Flags: review?(archaeopteryx) → review+
Thanks for the r+ and to both of you for the corrections. By the way, the SUMO article that <https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/en/2-0/frequently-asked-questions/> links to <https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-os-user-guide> is marked „no longer maintained“ and there are untranslated strings shown here and there. This page is in no way ready to go; if we are supposed to give this page a proper review, the deadline needs to be extended and of course the page needs to work properly.
added a few (native) comments to the current version. Hope u find it useful.
(In reply to Michael 'Coce' Köhler from comment #15) > Hi Michael, thanks for your corrections. > > (In reply to Michael Kohler [:mkohler] from comment #14) > > > die ihre täglichen Leben bereichern und vereinfachen > > > > that sounds weird, but that might just be me :) > > I agree, but when the original text says „enrich and simplify their daily > lives“ there’s not much I can do. I’d be grateful for any suggestions to fix > this. ;-) How about „mit denen ihre täglichen Leben bereichert und > vereinfacht werden“? Der "Leben" Plural hier ist ein Anglizismus, finde ich. "Die Leben von Vielen" vs "Das Leben von Vielen". So etwas dem Sprachgebrauch anzupassen ist normale Uebersetzung. > > "Firefox OS - Nutzer"? (appears twice) > > I think two hyphens are required here, see Rat der Rechtschreibung (2006): > Regeln und Wörterverzeichnis, §50, > <http://rechtschreibrat.ids-mannheim.de/download/regeln2006.pdf>. Firefox OS ist ein Trademark, insofern sollte deutsche Rechtschreibung da nur ausserhalb des Word-/Trademarks Anwendung finden.
Hello All, The team is still working on cleaning up the current process. Eventually only 2.0 will show up for German (as a new version). We thought this could be completed by today, but it looks like there is still a bit of work to be completed. We hope to finish the setup by tomorrow this time. If you are working on this at the same time, you may see in consistent behavior. You will have time to review and change when the team is done with their part of the work. I would like to know if the Video script is final as of now. I plan to have get the recording started tomorrow. Either way, let me know the current status. Thank you, Peiying
Thank you for your input, jenjiyana. Read without changes and fixed issues. Coce, please read it (hopefully the last time).
The version I am now uploading is the final one. Peiying, you can use it.
Thanks everyone. We will have you review the videos once done with mixing.
Thanks, and please let us know when the issues on the page have been fixed so we can go ahead with the review.
+ Ben. He will update us once the issues are resolved. The deadline of site go live will be pushed out accordingly.
Glad to hear, thanks.
Hi all, I will check in on that link. Other than that AFAIK you are cleared to translate. We did a lot of fixing of the imported content (it was pretty bad we know). And changed the CMS to not introduce html formatting. Please contact me directly if you have specific questions I am happy to help (and use need-info).

Hi, the captions on <https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/> are still untranslated.
Interesting.. i think this is likely a bug on our end. Filed bug 1135114 to investigate.

Hi Michael and Sebastian, Here are the source files: http://amara.org/en/videos/V2QklyHiChu4/info/masterfirefoxoscom-intro-to-firefox-os/ http://amara.org/en/videos/9uT23JBpJeQW/info/masterfirefoxoscom-marketplace/ http://amara.org/en/videos/FTGkAw3Bm2w1/info/masterfirefoxoscom-firefox-browser/ http://amara.org/en/videos/8VOxfdJa2Sq5/info/masterfirefoxoscom-stay-connected/ http://amara.org/en/videos/I5MgUpsze78I/info/masterfirefoxoscom-camera-gallery/ http://amara.org/en/videos/v77in7YLsOv2/info/masterfirefoxoscom-music-radio/ I was reassured by the team creating the script that nothing was changed from the Word doc you localized.
> http://amara.org/en/videos/v77in7YLsOv2/info/masterfirefoxoscom-music-radio/ > > I was reassured by the team creating the script that nothing was changed > from the Word doc you localized. Sorry, there are differences. In this video, there are "look up songs in the search box" and "share them" which are both missing from the English document https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YVrH54826adQGAKgRM9Nj3xZTJXhEaJ_n57936V1CM4/edit
> Intro to FFOS: > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcho9w6XLvk The texts which are sliding in at http://youtu.be/Xcho9w6XLvk?t=22s are translated wrong, have typos etc. Where do you get these strings from? They should be written as: Sprache einstellen Datenmenge kontrollieren Klingeltöne Lokale Apps > Music: > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf6xJYgGhoc "look up songs in the search box" should be "mittels der Suchleiste Titel finden" "share them" is correctly translated as "Titel teilen" The other videos are fine. Maybe Coce has more comments.
> Stay connected: > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fAeiNMP9nc „Group chats“ should be translated as „Gruppen-Chats“. That’s all I have to add to Sebastian’s comment.
Hi Rainer and Spencer, Here are the review comments - The text in the Word doc doesn't match 100% with English used in the videos. In addition, the bullet items in the intro needs correction. To summarize - Intro video: http://youtu.be/Xcho9w6XLvk?t=22s are translated wrong, have typos etc. Bullet item correction as follows: They should be written as: Sprache einstellen Datenmenge kontrollieren Klingeltöne Lokale Apps Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nf6xJYgGhoc "look up songs in the search box" should be "mittels der Suchleiste Titel finden" "share them" is correctly translated as "Titel teilen" Stay connected: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fAeiNMP9nc „Group chats“ should be translated as „Gruppen-Chats“

Hi Michael and Sebastian, Could you confirm that the Web content as it stands currently is final? We are still working on some known technical issues so localizers have a friendlier environment to do localization work. Two questions: - Is the web content final? We can turn it on by locale. English is launched but all other old versions are disabled at the moment - Are you ok to release the Web content with Videos playing English audio for the time being or do you prefer to have both the videos and web content to release the German 2.0 site? Additionally, and this is not expected of you, if you have had a chance to review the 1.1 version, is it ready to be turned on? We can take action on both versions depending on the status and your preference. Thank you so much for staying on top of everything in such a demanding last few weeks/months. Peiying
I don’t think the website is final so far, because it was not clear to me that there will be no further changes to it. Maybe we will find time for it during the weekend. As for the videos, I don’t understand the question. There are German audio versions of them, are there not? Why would we want English audio?
Also, I notice that currently <https://prod.masterfirefoxos.com/de/> redirects to the English version, so I see no way how we could properly review the page.
Hi Michael, We hope that all technical issues are resolved today (US time) or by tomorrow morning before heading to the weekend. If you want to wait, please do, all other languages are waiting as well. For the videos, it is just an option. We will enable the German ones all together. If you prefer to have both ready before switching to live, I can understand. Let's do that. *Ben*, can localizers still see the staged languages at this point or this is disabled until the technical issues are solved?
Michael and Sebastian, As you have seen it in my email that the files are moved to Verbatim. In the German file, it should include both versions 1.1 and 2.0, plus common strings used in navigation due to new layout at the new site. There are no extra strings to avoid - by moving to the new location, this issue is resolved. The new place for contextual testing is https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/ (or change it to 1.1 for the older version). Spencer is working on finalizing the changes you requested and he will post the update here soon.
There seem to be linebreaks missing on https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/demo-tips/ Is: "Dank Kamera-, Galerie, Musik-Apps und mehr unterhält Firefox OS Ihre Kunden unterwegs. Außerdem können sie mit den Dingen in Verbindung bleiben, die ihnen am wichtigsten sind. Kamera: Fotografieren, Bearbeiten und Teilen. Demonstrieren Sie unsere Kamera- und Galerie-Apps mit ihre vielen Funktionen, wie integrierten Stilfiltern, Video und mehr Musik: Mit Musik nur eine Fingerbewegung entfernt sehen Ihre Kunden, wie Firefox OS sie unterhält und auf der Straße tanzen lässt." Should be? "Dank Kamera-, Galerie, Musik-Apps und mehr unterhält Firefox OS Ihre Kunden unterwegs. Außerdem können sie mit den Dingen in Verbindung bleiben, die ihnen am wichtigsten sind. Kamera: Fotografieren, Bearbeiten und Teilen. Demonstrieren Sie unsere Kamera- und Galerie-Apps mit ihre vielen Funktionen, wie integrierten Stilfiltern, Video und mehr. Musik: Mit Musik nur eine Fingerbewegung entfernt sehen Ihre Kunden, wie Firefox OS sie unterhält und auf der Straße tanzen lässt. https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/en/2-0/customer-guide/ still talks about dragging a bar which is gone in the new design. "Das können Sie sagen:Mit Firefox OS bekommen Sie das" and "Das können Sie sagen:Firefox OS ist das am einfachsten zu" Whitespace missing at the border (?) of adjacent inline elements Personally, I would change the articles of the persons to match the gender on the photos: "Der Smartphone-Einsteiger" > "Die Smartphone-Einsteigerin" "Der Wertsuchende" > "Die Wertsuchende" https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/key-features/ Typo 2x: "Importieren Sie einfach Ihre Facebook-Freunde in Ihr Handy und bewahren Sie Ihre Gemeinscahft ein einem Ort, dank tiefgreifender Integration mit Ihren sozialen Lieblingsnetzwerken." https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/frequently-asked-questions/ talks about apps which will be available on launch. Seems outdated. The same for the text which talks about swiping right. Typo: "über neu Nachrichten erhalten"
The linebreaks mentioned by Archaeopteryx do not appear in the source code and are thus unfixable for us, I assume. The same applies to the missing whitespace and the potentially outdated content. The videos on the various subpages are still in English. The Find My Device question on <https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/take-the-challenge/> currently has 1 and 3 as its correct answers, even though all three should be correct (also applies to the English version). Archaeopteryx may have some more comments in a while.
https://l10n.masterfirefoxos.com/de/2-0/take-the-challenge/ Non-German part: Question 2 says Facebook is a pre-installed app. As a consumer, I expect this a promise of an app which provides the status updates, chat, and Facebook search. As far as I know, only the import of contacts from Facebook is pre-installed. benefits of Firefox OS question: answer 3 and 4 are nearly identical: "Since it is built by Firefox, you can feel confident that Firefox OS is backed by a global community working on your behalf and with your interests in mind. Since it’s made by Firefox, Firefox OS is backed by a global community working on your behalf and with your interests in mind." "While all of these statements are true, which two responses would be most useful to a first-time smartphone customer?" None of the answers is accepted as the correct one (should be "Firefox OS isn’t cluttered with more than you need. It gives you what you’d expect in a smartphone, with an easy-to-use interface that makes it easy to get started.") "Which of the following statements are true of the Cost Control app that is preloaded on Firefox OS?" The page claims "You can use it to create and set a daily budget for data usage" is true, but the only valid time intervals are weekly and monthly. "What’s the best response to this customer’s objection? “I’ve heard there aren’t many apps available.”" Answer accepted as correct: "Apps developers are slowly realizing the benefit of HTML5 in support of the Open Web." But if the other option is chosen: "Firefox OS is backed by a global community of developers and content providers dedicated to creating new and exciting content and even locally-relevant apps for the Firefox OS platform. New apps and content are added every day." the page shows: "The best response to this objection is to talk about all the apps that are available."
The changes to the German strings were made.
Thank you Michael and Sebastian. Spencer, could you update everyone on the progress with the videos?
Hey guys sorry for the delay, MWC and GDC got in the way. Thanks, two things about the videos: in „intro“ at 0:29 it seems that „Lokale Apps“ is not properly centered and in „browser“ at around 0:17 it sounds like there was some unintelligible word: „[…] ihre wichtigsten ??? Webseiten ansehen“
Hi Michael, is the web content good as of now? Please note you have 1.1 and 2.0 to confirm as they are in the same file.
I think the web content is good, the video issues from comment #53 still exist.
