We're supposed to not show MOWs to desktop. But we are intending to show them to tablets (and, in theory, not just firefoxos tablets). Knowing that we have checks for firefoxos, android, etc, we should try to reasonably identify a "desktop" (probably as a combination of factors, instead of just size?) and not show MOWs to those clients. Overhauling the platform detection is probably not in scope, but if there's not a way to do this without doing that, we should talk with Lindsay first.
Note that the API obeys whatever dev/device parameters are passed for Websites. So, if a dev=desktop parameter is passed, it will only return Website that are marked as compatible for desktop. Unfortunately, that's not enough, since you can override the parameter the frontend is sending through the platform filter. So I think the frontend has to cheat and restrict the doc_types it wants multi-search to return when desktop is detected.
