It would be nice if Alt(Ctrl? Shift?)+Click on the tab could close it. It would
save mouse movement to the "X" on the right-hand side.

Adding this feature (Accel+click a tab closes the tab) may not be necessary,
as if you have a hand on the keyboard to press Accel for an Accel+click, you
already have a hand on the keyboard to press Accel+W (pinkie or thumb on Accel
depending on bindings and middle finger on W assuming qwerty).

However, Dvorak users may need this feature.

work-arounds:

 - right-click (context-click) on the tab, close tab
 - middle-click on the tab

Middle-click may not be the final choice, but for now it does work.

I think Shift+click would be better than Alt+cilck for closing tabs because:
* Alt+click is reserved by some Linux window managers.
* mIRC uses shift+click on its mdi taskbar to close mdi windows.
* Shift+click on a link is "save target", which wouldn't make sense for a tab,
whereas Alt+click might be "open link behind this window", which could become
"turn tab into window behind this one".

If you can hit a modifier, you can hit Ctrl+W. (I'm a Dvorak user and it is easy
on Dvorak keyboards too.)

WONTFIX. There are enough ways to close tabs already (I count 11).

I have some very good reasons why this should be implemented:

1) Shift+Click on an non-active tab would close the non-active tab. This makes
it much faster to close several tabs at the same time by doing a
Click-Click-Click rather than a
Select-Wait-Click-Select-Wait-Click-Select-Wait-Click or a right-click menu for
several tabs.

2) It is the shortcut used by Opera, from which the idea of tabs were taken, so
Opera users would find it handy to have a consistent UI with Mozilla.

3) Ctrl+W only closes the active tab. Shift+Click lets you choose which active
or non-active tab to close. In short, this proposal is not an alternative to the
"x" button on the right, but rather an alternative to another proposal to have a
close button on each tab. (I lost the bug number for that).

As said in comment #2, middle-click on a tab closes it.  Is this RFE for
changing that or for adding shift-click to also do the same thing?

As noted in Bug 160809, middle-click should be accessible from two-button mice.
I don't have a middle-mouse button and it's impossible for me to close an
inactive tab without opening a menu.

From the dup, advantages and disadvantages of various modifiers:

SHIFT+CLICK

  Good: Consistent with mIRC
  Good: Consistent with Opera 6 and 7

  Bad: Would be nice to have Shift+click as "Move tab to its own window" (bug
102132).  Maybe that could be double-click instead of Shift+click?

CTRL+CLICK

  Good: Consistent with Ctrl+click = Middle-click elsewhere in Phoenix
  Good: Ctrl+click on links is "open in new tab", which doesn't make sense for a
tab.

  Bad: Would interfere with Ctrl+click for selecting multiple tabs (bug 132674),
for example in order to "Move these tabs into their own window".
  Bad: Might interfere with Ctrl+drag for cloning tabs.

ALT+CLICK

  Good: Alt+click on links is "save as", which doesn't make sense for a tab.
  Good: Less likely to be triggered by someone trying to select tabs, move them
into new windows, etc.

  Bad: Alt+click is reserved by some Linux window managers.  (But I think Linux
machines have middle mouse buttons more often than Windows machines do.)
