Thanks for the great detective work.
This isn't an ideal test, but does the problem also occur if you run the beta from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/channel/ ?

Summary: Not longer access to shared folders in local network → TB 38.3 - Mac Os X 10.6.8 - Not longer access to shared folders in local network
I noticed that this bug does not only affect Thunderbird, but also Firefox (45.0.1 here) : I'm not able to access shared folders when I chose File > Open file. I can neither access shared folders when I'm picking files to upload (for example).
So it's clear not limited to Product: Thunderbird, but rather due to a common component.
