User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 Build ID: 20151223140742 Steps to reproduce: click on thunderbird icon on desktop to open Actual results: thunderbird opens to the main window showing all my email accounts and folders in left pane as usual. But right pane does not show ontents of Inbox; instead it shows "Thunderbird Mail - Inbox" in the heading with sections "Email", "Accounts", and "Advanced Features" below. In Email section, clicking "Read mail" or "Write a new message" does nothing. Neither does clicking any subfolder in the left pane so I am unable to read any inbox or sent messages in any of my email accounts. Expected results: Before this latest version, it would open to the last folder that I was viewing when Thunderbird closed.

I have the same problem with Thunderbird 38.5.0. Uninstalling it and reverting to 38.4.0 brought things back to normal. I then tried 38.5.0 again, in case the problem was unrelated, but again it failed and I reverted to 38.4.0. I'm running Windows 7 on a Thinkpad T420s. I have 10 Thunderbird add-ins active: Account Colors, AttachmentExtractor, CompactHeader, Dictionary Switcher, Folderpane Tools, LookOut, Quicktext, Remove Duplicate Messages, and URL Link. My recollection is that Thunderbird 38.5.0 displayed "loading messages" but was not consuming any CPU nor was its memory use changing, so I think it was doing nothing. I waited several minutes, for what usually takes a moment, before giving up. I quit and restarted Thunderbird, and rebooted. but 38.5.0 just isn't working for me.

Dupe of bug 1211291? If you're able to reproduce, could you track down which add-on is causing this? One theory for the root cause is that some other add-on is interfering with the update of (integrated) Lightning. LookOut is one of the higher suspects.

Some additional information Many menu items do not work - For example clicking any of the following has no effect Tools: Address Book Saved Files Add-ons Activity manager Chat status join chat Import error console options Message:New message Toolbar buttons Write and Address Book also do not work. Also, closing TB causes it to remain as a background process with memory usage of 93.6 MB and 0% CPU. Clicking the desktop icon to re-open the app has no effect. I need to end the task before it will re-start with the same limited function.
