Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0
Build ID: 20160210153822
Steps to reproduce:
I uninstalled 38.6 and reinstalled 38.5. Reinstalling 38.6 reproduced the problem. I've recovered by resuming at the 38.5 level.
Actual results:
When 38.6 was installed, the right panel did not show any email messages when a folder in the left panel was clicked. Also, in the Menu bar, the help button was missing.

> Is the calendar addon installed? Is it enabled?
I had been meaning to investigate the new calendar function but haven't gotten to it yet. I do have many plug-ins and extensions but they all are disabled. Also, under 'appearance' is default 38.6.0 which is stated to be incompatible.

I did some more digging this afternoon and found two extensions that were stated to be incompatible but were turned on. These were Lightening (calendar function) 4.0.6 and Extra Folder Columns 1.1.5.
I turned them off and now 38.6.0 is working OK.
Does this mean that I won't be able to use the new calendar function in Thunderbird?

Extra Folder Columns is obsolete and should be removed. Lightning should be compatible, try ti enable it if still issues try updating or installing from addons.mozilla.org

I enabled Lightening at the level indicated which was 4.0.6. TB failed as before. I disabled it again and recovered. I then downloaded and installed Lightening 4.0.5.2 which was stated to be the latest level for TB 38. AOK now. I don't know how 4.0.6 got installed or where it came from if 4.0.5.2 is the latest level.

Herbert, this is a known issue bug 1211160 that is similar to this, but was supposed to be solved in 38.6.0 Lightning 4.0.6 is shipped with Thunderbird.
Are you using Roaming Profiles or using some other mechanism that might be syncing your profile folder?

I'm not familiar with this. How would I know if such was installed?

Roaming profiles are stored on a server for both backup purposes, and to allow you to use multiple computers. This would typically only be in a corporate environment with central IT management.

Let's close this since we won't get more information from the user. A similar bug is bug 1249894.

Now that I am at 38.0.6 with Lightening at 4.0.5.2 and TB is working properly, I checked my wife's computer which is nearly identical to mine. She never had a problem when updating to 38.0.6 and Lightening is shown as 4.0.5.2. So AOK here now.

Three users reported the same issue in the German Thunderbird Mail DE forum after updating to v38.6.0:
Unterordner werden nicht angezeigt, keine "Hilfe", kein Bearbeiten möglich
The symptoms are the same as described in Bugs 1211291, 1211358 and 1211160.
Downgrading to TB 38.5.x or disabling Lightning (or installing Lightning v4.0.5.2 from AMO) solved the problem.
As far as I know, none of the users has a Roaming Profile.
