(Reporter: adrian.browne, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; Trident/7.0; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; rv:11.0) like Gecko

Steps to reproduce:

Version 38.5 on my machine was set to automatic update. Update 38.6 was offered and it self installed. Initial install of 38.6 failed. Full download of 38.6 then commenced and installed, install completed. Thunderbird was closed and re-opened. Version 38.6 failed to function correctly. After failure of 38.6 to function correctly it was uninstalled and version 38.3 was reinstalled and allowed to update to 38.6. Update completed normally. Version 38.6 again failed to function correctly and was uninstalled. Version 38.3 was reinstalled and automatic update was turned off. Update was agreed only to version 38.5 which is now running normally and stable.

Actual results:

After opening the installed version 38.6, the none of the folders in the left pane could be viewed except by creating new windows first. The folders could not be switched between by clicking the folders in the left pane and created new windows behaved erratically. The Get Messages and Write Message commands became inoperative. The Home window could not be closed.

Expected results:

Normally (up to and including version 38.5) Thunderbird opened with my default view as the Inbox folder. Clicking on any of the folders in the left pane switched the view to the contents of that folder. Home Window (often displayed after update) could be closed.
OS: Unspecified → Windows 10
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Summary: Thunderbird vesrion 38.6 will not run correctly → Thunderbird version 38.6 will not run correctly
In the actual results I should have used the word "Tab" instead of "Window"

If this bug is a duplicate of an earlier bug (1211291)relating to version 38.3.0, that has supposedly been resolved , then how is it that versions 38.4.0 and 38.5.0 worked perfectly on my machine but 38.6.0 did not??? A complete removal and reinstallation of 38.6.0 did not solve the problem.

Sorry if not using the system properly but this is the first bug report I have had to make.

You have chosen to mark my report as resolved since it is a duplicate of bug 1211291. If I understand this correctly 12111291 related to a bug that occured on upgrading to version 38.3.0. Versions 38.3.0 to 38.5.0 ran perfectly well on my machine. In fact 38.5.0 is currently running without exhibiting the problems referred to. The problem only occured on upgrade from 38.5.0 to 38.6.0. I uninstalled Thunderbird and carried out a direct install of version 38.6.0. This also exhibited the same problem. If this bug is indeed a duplicate then how is it that it onlyn surfaced on my machine on the installation og 38.6.0???
I have yet again carried out a complete uninstall of version 38.5.0 and a direct download of 38.6.0. Version 38.6.0 during installation informed me that the "Lightning" add-on was incompatible and would be disabled to which I responded OK. I let the installation of 38.6.0 complete and let thunderbird open. On opening exactly the same problem was encountered. However, having closed thunderbird 38.6.0 I went to Uninstall programs to remove it in order to revert to 38.5.0. The response was that 38.6.0 could not be uninstalled since it was still running. Checking in task manager showed this to be the case. Stopping 38.6.0 in task manager and then restaring 38.6.0 produced no change in the performance. I have yet again had to uninstall 38.6.0 and revert to 38.5.0 to have a correctly functioning version. There is most definitely a problem with 38.6.0 and its installation. It would appear that while this produces exactly the same symptoms as the earlier bug it does not have the same cause. It is also interesting that exiting from 38.6.0 after installation did not result in closure of the program.
This *is* a duplicate, but of a different bug ;-) Please do *not* reopen the bug. If you want to fix your issue or help the development in finding the problem, please do this (quoted from bug 1249894 comment #41):

====
The fix is very simple.
Visit your profile, it is located here (on Windows):
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\<name of profile>
In my case:
C:\Users\jorgk\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\testing.testing

In the profile folder is a folder called "extensions". Rename that to "extensions-xx" and your problem is solved. Of course all your extensions will disappear this way.

If you want to save the world, then compress the "extensions-xx" folder using Zip/7Zip/Rar and make it available to the Thunderbird development. We are still looking for a reproducible case. You could upload the zipped extensions to a file transfer hoster (like www.WeTransfer.com) and post the link here. Or share it via Dropbox. Thanks in advance!
====

Note: The Lightning update process was changed in 38.6, which most likely caused the problem.
