RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 47315

Details

(Keywords: polish)

Build: 2002030803, Mac OS 9.2

To reproduce:
1. Hover over a bookmark in the Personal Toolbar.

What you see:
* A massive tooltip repeating the bookmark title (which is useless, since the
title is already visible), and address (which should be in the status bar,
    not in a tooltip).

What you should see:
*   No tooltip.
Severity: normal → minor
Keywords: 4xp, polish
What I see: The bookmarks URL and not the title and that's is very useful
The title is there on linux 2002-03-08-07.

mpt, is this an XP bug, or just macos?
What about cropped titles?

The URI will start appearing in the status bar as soon as bug 31620 is fixed. At
that time you may have an argument to remove that part of the tooltip.

The title is shown in the tooltip because it may be cropped in the personal
toolbar. It would be nice to only show it if the title had been cropped, but I
have no idea if we can implement that. (Is there a way to tell if the text got
cropped?)
I have filed the related, if not conflicting, bug 135962: [RFE] Show description
field in tooltip on hover over bookmarks.
I have no problem with using a title tip (not a tooltip) to show the complete
title for cropped bookmarks only. But given the choice between showing tooltips
for all bookmarks or for none of them, I think none is much less annoying.
Tooltips can be disabled in the Appearance preferences panel on Windows ME, not
on Mac?
No, tooltips can't be disabled globally on Mac OS. On Mac OS pre-X, they can't
be disabled globally because programs aren't supposed to have tooltips at all.
And on Mac OS X, help tags can't be disabled globally because they aren't ever
supposed to be badly designed like these ones.
In that case, you could comment out the last 3 modified lines at
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=69960&action=view (from bug
105485) in comm.jar
I like it the way it is. It only appears if I hover instead of clicking and it
doesn't cause me any problems if it appears when I don't need it.
Updating OS since this applies for mac os x and support for mac classic is dead.
OS: Mac System 9.x → MacOS X
There seems to be an overlapping request to widen the buttons so that they are
not abbreviated (Bug 66669)

If that change were made + the URL were put down in the status bar (bug 31620)
then it would make sense to clean up this tooltip... or maybe populate it with
the Description like #5 suggested...

In the meantime I think it is quite useful and not at all anoying...
...just make sure the URL IS in the tooltip when the status bar is hidden...
I would suggest WONTFIX. Safari shows a tooltip with just the URI for bookmarks
on the bookmarks bar. I personally like seeing the title, since it occassionally
gets cropped, but if bug 66669 does get fixed, that's no longer needed. The one
reason I would like to keep these tooltips is that it would allow us to show all
URIs in a bookmark group, like we do for the homepage button. I'm not sure how
we could do that using the status bar.
