Unable to open the summary file for Inbox. Perhaps there was an error on disk, or the full path is too long.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Ubuntu Chromium/55.0.2883.87 Chrome/55.0.2883.87 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: Start thunderbird 50.0b3 (beta) on Ubuntu 16.10 x86-64, either in safe-mode or not. In the folders sidebar, I click on the Inbox for my Gmail account. Actual results: I get a popup that says: Unable to open the summary file for Inbox. Perhaps there was an error on disk, or the full path is too long. The console gets these messages: (thunderbird:11447): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme. This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found. (thunderbird:11447): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'dialog-warning' for stock: Error opening file /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/48/dialog-warning.svg: Too many open files (thunderbird:11447): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'image-missing' for stock: Error opening file /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/48/image-missing.svg: Too many open files (thunderbird:11447): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'dialog-warning' for stock: Error opening file /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/48/dialog-warning.svg: Too many open files (thunderbird:11447): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'image-missing' for stock: Error opening file /usr/share/icons/Humanity/status/48/image-missing.svg: Too many open files Expected results: It should have opened my Inbox and displayed the titles of the messages in my Inbox.

I looked at the following bugs, which were of no help: 1189609 windows 767210 windows 7 closed for lack of reply 540214 windows - resolved by patch in 2010. 462539 windows vista - fixed 2008 These bugs reported similar symptoms, but in Windows, with exploration of files in Windows and folders that don't seem to exist on Linux. Also, since TB worked for me in October, it's doubtful that patches done in 2010 or 2008 are relevant (unless something regressed).

this likely has the same cause as bug 1325732. Perhaps many fonts installed?

further, filing new bugs without reolvling and answering previous issues like bug 855836 and bug 1322409 end up with a mass confusion of bugs with no resolution. Please, let's get this sorted out without filing more bug reports.
(In reply to Wayne Mery (:wsmwk, NI for questions) from comment #2) > this likely has the same cause as bug 1325732. Perhaps many fonts installed? So, does thunderbird put a restriction on the number of fonts that I can have installed? I would be ecstatic if I could get a resolution to any of these symptoms. The other symptoms may be related, but because the symptoms are different, who can tell if it's the same bug?

But your OS does limit the number of file descriptors per process that can be open. > I would be ecstatic if I could get a resolution to any of these symptoms. > The other symptoms may be related, but because the symptoms are different, > who can tell if it's the same bug? I'm telling you definitively they are related. And, would you please answer my previous question "Perhaps many fonts installed?"
