Details

I have noticed that the dynamic menus on some web sites will work one day and
will stop working some other day, without any apparent reason. I have seen this
over a number of Mozilla releases, but also in Netscape 6.2.1, which I have been
using for a number of months.

I have had <http://www.cellnetwork.se/> as my prime example for some time: The
dynamic menus will sometimes appear instantly when clicking on a top-level item,
but on other occasions I have to click a number of times around an item to make
the menu appear.

Another example is <http://www.hsb.se/>, which worked fine yesterday, but today
the drop-down menus seem to be dismissed just before the mouse click reaches
them, so the action does not take place. The fact that it worked yesterday was a
pleasant surprise to me, since it didn't work three weeks ago. I changed to a
newer build this morning, before visiting the site again, but the behaviour in
Netscape 6.2.1 has also changed overnight.

Another possible example is bug #132592, but that site doesn't work in Netscape
6.2.1.

Of course, I cannot say that there haven't been changes on the affected web
sites that could account for this behaviour. But still, the behaviour puzzles me.
On the first site (http://www.cellnetwork.se/), no problem. Menus are available
at first click, even if I don't speak swedish, it is fine to see.

On the second site, menus are all at the left of the page, making the page
unusable. :-(

Using : Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:0.9.9+) Gecko/20020322
Summary: Erratic function of dynamic menus → Erratic function of dynamic menus
cellnetworks.se works fine for me, but my experience with hsb.se is the same as
Frederic. In the javascript console I see lots of these (which looks like an
evangelism issue):

Error: connectAnchorToMenu is not defined
Source File: http://www.hsb.se/hsb/jsp/Crosslink.jsp?d=11126 Line: 48

Where the line of the error varies.

This morning I re-installed 0.9.9, and noticed that it didn't work either. I
have since cleanly re-installed 20020320-19, and the menus still don't work. I
even tried renaming the .mozilla directory, running with a clean user profile,
but with no luck.

I can add <http://www.iconmedialab.se/>, <http://www.svenskaspel.se/>, and
<http://www.cellnetwork.com/> to the list of problematic sites. IconMedialab has
never failed me in the past, but today it does.

Here is something interesting: not only do I have the same problem with Netscape
6.2.1, I also have it with Beonex Communicator 0.7 on the same machine.

I think the problem is due to something in my setup, so I will describe it:
- Mozilla 20020320-19 (installed using Redhat 7.1 RPMs)
- SuSE Linux 7.1
- KDE 3 rc3
- XFree 4.2.0
- 1600 x 1200 resolution
- AMD Athlon 1400 MHz processor
Per, in the event that the ~/.netscape directory is interfering with the mozilla
profile, could you try renaming that one too and try with a new mozilla profile?
Renaming the .netscape and .netscape6 directories doesn't make a difference,
either. I have even created a new user and started Mozilla as that user: still
no improvement.
The menus are working again, after I restarted the X session. It's difficult to
say why this should make any difference, but at least I now know one possible
work-around to the problem. I will wait a little before resolving to WORKSFORME,
though.

Well, you just did:-)
I was too hasty in resolving the bug. Today the menus on the problem sites are
no longer working, although they worked fine yesterday in the same X session.

Using 0.9.9+ 20020401-08 on Linux.

Below is my current list of problem sites. I'm wondering what they have in
common that makes the menus stop working after some time, which can only be
cured by restarting the X session.

http://www.cellnetwork.com/
http://www.hsb.se/
http://www.iconmedialab.se/
http://www.svenskaspel.se/
http://www.bellsouth.com/
http://www.scribona.se/

Last seen in RC1 build 20020417-17 on Linux.
In reviewing this report, I notice that the problem has been reported
to occur with both of these browsers:

                      Mozilla/Netscape 6
                      Beonex Communicator 0.7

I'm wondering:

1. Per: does the problem also occur with IE or NN4.7 on the same box?
2. Does the problem occur on any other Linux box that you know of?

Note: the comments by other contributors above sound like Evangelism
issues rather than the problem Per has reported. I suspect that for
whatever reason, the reported problem is specific to Per's Linux box -
In answer to the questions in comment #11:
>1. Per: does the problem also occur with IE or NN4.7 on the same box?

I have never run IE on this box. As for NN4.7, the problem sites are working
fine as I'm writing this, whereas they are not working in Mozilla and Netscape 6.

>2. Does the problem occur on any other Linux box that you know of?

Not that I have seen personally, but in bug #132592 Andrew Schultz has reported
similar problems. I'm CC-ing Andrew to hear how he fares with the other sites on
my list.

----------

By the way, I think we can write http://www.scribona.se/ off from my list - the
site doesn't look familiar today, so maybe they have redesigned the site over
the weekend.
none of the sites on your current list work for me...

I'm not sure what the "menus" are at http://www.cellnetwork.com/, but if it's
the wavy line with text, then that doesn't work.

The behavior of the other sites is the same as in bug 132592.
Yes, the menus at <http://www.cellnetwork.com/> are supposed to appear if you
click the text items in the wavy line. It's interesting that with a little
effort I can make the menus appear, if I repeatedly click on and round an item
(maybe 10 times). Can you try that, Andrew?
http://www.hsb.se/ has a document.onmousedown event handler that erases the
menus and might interfere with the menus themselves. The menus are also
designed to hide onmouseout (which can get triggered on click, same as 132592).
the showing up on the left side of the page looks similar to bug 120716.

http://www.cellnetwork.com/ has a onmouseout even for the text to remove the
"hilite" which activates when you click on it (same as 132592). I don't know if
that is what actually screws it up. I also can get the menu by clicking a bunch
of times quickly.
I suspect that SPP, <http://www.spp.se/>, suffers from a problem similar to that
of Cell Network. It worked OK the first times I used the menus, but after a
while they stopped working almost entirely, although I notice that I can make a
submenu appear by clicking repeatedly round the down arrow.
can you still reproduce this with a recent version of Mozilla like 1.1beta?
I will need some time to answer the question, since the problem will usually
appear after some days of uptime. I started the current X session just some 16
hours ago, so it's too early to say anything yet, although I cannot see any
problem today, with 1.1b 20020807.

By the way, the problem with http://www.spp.se/ doesn't seem to appear in tandem
with these other sites.
OK, after one week running in the same X session, I can clearly see the same
problem. I have just downloaded 1.1b+ 20020815 and it doesn't make a difference.

Roughly, I can divide the problem sites into two categories:

1) The menus will drop down or pop up correctly, but nothing happens when
clicking an item. Right-clicking will bring up the context menu for whatever
lies beneath the clicked item.

http://www.hsb.se/
http://www.iconmedialab.se/
http://www.svenskaspel.se/
http://www.bellsouth.com/
http://www.aderagroup.com/

2) The menu can only be made to appear by clicking repeatedly round the hot
spot. Once the menu appears, it will function as expected.

http://www.spp.se/
No improvement in build 20020904.

I'm adding http://www2.deanza.fhda.edu/ from duplicate bug #154492, with Andrew
Schultz' comment:

"the problem is that Mozilla erroneously fires mouseout events when it should
not. This seems to even include when you mouseover a link (it immeadiately
fires a mouseover event, so you don't notice it). This is the same problem as
bug 132592, although the case here is a lot simpler (I thought I had seen cases
like yours that worked fine, but perhaps not)."

I think http://www.resolvia.com/ is another site with the same problem.

Here is another site that misbehaves for me, with submenus that disappear before
I get a chance to click them:

URL has changed, due to company merger. I can see the bug today, in Mozilla 1.4
RC1, and Mozilla Firebird 0.6.
The problem is reproducible in Mozilla 1.5 beta. As I don't think the patches
that would solve bug #102578 have been checked in, maybe it's not very surprising.
This bug is still there, 13 years later? Noticed this happening on https://financer.com/sv/ (submenus, dropdown). Items below gets clicked.

Verified it works well with Edge, Chrome and Safari.
Component: Event Handling → User events and focus handling

I'm wondering:

  1. Per: does the problem also occur with IE or NN4.7 on the same box?
  2. Does the problem occur on any other Linux box that you know of?
