User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.11; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/51.0 Build ID: 20170125094131 Steps to reproduce: I downloaded version 51 and installed it. Then I clicked on the app. Actual results: Thunderbird began to come up, to the point that I could see mail windows. Then suddenly the crash dialog box appeared. Restarting in safe mode provided the same results: beginning to open, then crashing out. Expected results: It should have come up at least in safe mode and stayed up instead of crashing out.

You misunderstand. It is OK that you created a bug report, and that you submitted a crash report. The crash report got sent to the crash reporting system. That crash report has an identifier - a "crash ID". We need you to give the crash ID here in the bug report so we can do the follow up work. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports are instructions to you, for how to get the crash ID for the crashes you already sent
I hate to say it, but maybe move to TB 52 beta.
Thanks. Your crash IDs confirm the issue is bug 1332246, which will not be helped by using TB52. To avoid the crash, you might disable Thunderbird access to Contacts in MacOS, or use 50beta https://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/50.0b2/
